Hello, coffee friends around the world.
This week's prompt, number 133, made me think that there are some things I'll never understand.
Yes, of course I've been to social and professional gatherings where people suddenly find out they don't drink coffee: They're in a coffee shop, but they're not going to drink coffee.
In fact, I've been in that position, so I understand why this can happen.
In my case, when people invited me to have coffee, I would go, even if I didn't drink coffee, for two main reasons:
The first is that we don't all like the same things. I can be in a place where people are drinking coffee, and I can socialize without having to drink the same thing. I can also order other things I like so I don't look out of place.
The second reason is politeness. I find it wrong when someone asks me out and I start complaining right away. It's not that I'm allergic to seafood and they invite me to eat shrimp. That's not the case. In fact, many times when they invited me, I would have a quick cup of espresso, just to be polite. But at least I tried.
If someone doesn't like coffee (something rare in Cuba, but it exists), because they've tried it in several varieties and at several cafes, that's fine. There's something for everyone.
What I don't understand is those who say they don't like it without having tried it. That seems childish to me, and I'll never understand it. Not just with coffee, but with everything: you have to try everything and give new flavors and textures a chance. Just look at me drinking cold brew and frappuccino. Things I never thought I'd try.
