In this diverse and complex world, and in a supposedly advanced society, there are still people who are governed by archaic and absurd stereotypes.
This is the case of what happened to my stepson (and also to me as a child and young man) simply for having long hair.
I wonder why, even today, with so much information on social media and in every community in every country, stereotypes continue to be followed.
The answers I find are depressing. Most of them, especially gender stereotypes, are based on old, decontextualized, and erroneous beliefs. They're like a chain people refuse to break free from, perhaps out of sheer comfort or fear of thinking.
Many of the stereotypes used today are based on ignorance, sexism, and above all, mediocrity.
It's easier to label than to make the effort to understand and accept.
Several rather sad things happened to me as a child. In fact, they sporadically repeated themselves until I was well into my twenties.
I remember an older woman telling me one day on the street that I looked like a woman. Just because I had long hair. My beard was completely ignored.
It happened to me for years in school; I was labeled effeminate or gay because of my long hair, and when I started wearing earrings, it got even worse.
The most incredible thing is that it wasn't my peers, but older people who said those things to me. People who, by the very nature of life, should be more mature, educated, and open-minded.
A man with long hair is therefore neither effeminate nor gay. Just as a woman with short hair is neither more nor less of a woman.
I grew my hair long for aesthetic reasons and personal taste. The fact that anyone else does the same has nothing to do with sex or gender. It's just hair. It's absurd that in the 21st century this is still a topic that needs clarifying.
The same applies to other nonsense. If a man shaves his body, it could be for health reasons, for hygiene, for his sport, or for his profession, like a swimmer or a cyclist. It has absolutely nothing to do with his sexual orientation. People who think like that are not only prejudiced, but they also don't know the real world.
Classical guitarists grow their right-hand nails long to pluck the strings, while pianists keep them short. Would anyone in their right mind think they're homosexual because of this? In other words, anyone who thinks that, simply because they don't fit an invented stereotype, is just ignorant. There's no other word for it.
I am an artist. And here's another stereotype that exhausts me: not all artists are bohemian and wild.
Not all artists drink or do drugs. I lead an orderly life, I work hard every morning, and I take care of my family.
That cliché of the unrestrained artist is a flawed and unfair stereotype. It's pure mental laziness. People watch a movie and think it's reality.
That's ignorance, again.
And while we're talking about ignorance, many people think that a writer or a musician, just because they publish a book or record an album, is rich and lives well and easily.
If only!
That's completely wrong. Most of us have another job, struggle to pay the bills, and art is a passion, not a ticket to riches. To assume otherwise is to have no idea how the world works.
But in the end, all this leads me to a bigger question. Why this obsession with categorizing others? And above all, what business is it of anyone else's sexual orientation?
That's the root of much of this. The need to put people in boxes to feel safe. Why don't they focus on their own lives and let others live theirs?
That's what they should be doing, in addition to educating themselves and evolving. Stop worrying about other people's hair, other people's nails, other people's private lives.
The problem isn't long hair. The problem is short-sightedness. And against that, the only thing left to do is keep living as you want, and hope that, eventually, they'll be left speechless.

En este mundo tan mezclado, variado y en una sociedad tan avanzada (supuestamente), todavía hay personas que se rigen por estereotipos arcaicos y absurdos. Este es el caso de lo que le sucedió a mi hijastro (y también a mí cuando niño y joven) solo por tener el pelo largo.
Me pregunto por qué aún hoy, con tanta información en redes y en cada comunidad en todos los países, se continúan siguiendo a los estereotipos. Las respuestas que encuentro son deprimentes. La mayoría, sobre todo los estereotipos de género, están basados en creencias viejas, descontextualizadas y erradas. Son como una cadena de la que la gente se niega a zafarse, quizás, por pura comodidad o miedo a pensar. Muchos de los estereotipos que hoy se usan están basados en la ignorancia, el machismo y, sobre todo, en la mediocridad. Es que resulta más fácil etiquetar que hacer el esfuerzo de entender y aceptar.
A mí me pasaron varias cosas bastante tristes cuando niño. De hecho, esporádicamente se repetían hasta pasado mis veinte años. Recuerdo que una mujer, ya mayor, un día en la calle me dijo que me parecía a una mujer. Solo por el hecho de que tenía el pelo largo. Mi barba fue ignorada por completo. Me pasó durante años en el colegio, me tildaban de afeminado o gay por el pelo largo, y cuando me puse los aretes, peor todavía. Lo más increíble es que no eran mis contemporáneos, sino las personas mayores las que me decían eso. Personas que, por ley de la vida, deben ser más maduras, estudiadas, de mente abierta.
Un hombre que tiene el pelo largo no es, por tanto, ni afeminado ni gay. Del mismo modo que una mujer que lo tenga corto no es más o menos mujer. Me dejé el largo del pelo por una cuestión estética y de gusto personal. El que cualquiera haga lo mismo no tiene que ver con el sexo o el género. Es pelo. Es absurdo que en pleno siglo XXI esto siga siendo un tema que haya que aclarar.
Lo mismo aplica para otras tonterías. Si un hombre se afeita el cuerpo puede ser por una cuestión de salud, por higiene, por su deporte o por su profesión, como un nadador o un ciclista. No tiene absolutamente nada que ver con su preferencia sexual. La gente que piensa así no solo es prejuiciosa, sino que no conoce el mundo real.
Los guitarristas clásicos se dejan largas las uñas de la mano derecha para pulsar las cuerdas, mientras que las pianistas las llevan cortas. ¿Alguien en su sano juicio pensaría que son homosexuales por este hecho? O sea, el que piense eso, por no cumplir un estereotipo inventado, es sencillamente, un ignorante. No hay otra palabra.
Yo soy artista. Y aquí hay otro estereotipo que me agota: no todos los artistas somos bohemios y alocados. No todos los artistas bebemos o nos drogamos. Yo llevo una vida ordenada, trabajo duro todas las mañanas y atiendo a mi familia. Ese cliché del artista desenfrenado es un estereotipo errado e injusto. Es pura pereza mental. La gente ve una película y cree que es la realidad. Eso es ignorancia, otra vez.
Y mientras hablamos de ignorancia, muchos piensan que un escritor o un músico, por publicar un libro o grabar un disco, es rico y vive bien y fácil. Ojalá! Eso es completamente errado. La mayoría de nosotros tenemos otro trabajo, batallamos para pagar las cuentas y el arte es una pasión, no un billete a la riqueza. Asumir lo contrario es no tener idea de cómo funciona el mundo.
Pero al final, todo esto me lleva a una pregunta más grande. ¿Por qué esta obsesión con encasillar a los demás? Y sobre todo, ¿qué les importa a los demás la preferencia sexual de cada quién? Esa es la raíz de mucho de esto. La necesidad de meter a la gente en cajas para sentirse seguros. ¿Por qué no se centran en su vida y dejan a los demás vivir la suya? Eso es lo que deben hacer, además de instruirse y evolucionar. Dejar de preocuparse por el pelo de los demás, por las uñas de los demás, por la vida privada de los demás. El problema no es el pelo largo. El problema es la mente corta. Y contra eso, lo único que queda es seguir viviendo como uno quiere, y esperar que, eventualmente, se queden sin palabras.
