I was around 7 years old and didn’t really understand what marriage itself was, but I remember being so angry at my mom. And I also made up my mind that if she wasn’t going to allow me to marry my brother, then I wasn’t also going to allow her to marry him either. I don’t even know how the whole marriage thing started, but I remember finding out that at a point in almost everyone’s lives, they stay with someone. And for me, my choice was my brother because it would be easy staying with him. So my plan was to go to school, do all that I had to do and when I was ready to marry, just choose this man who came from the same womb as me. After all, life doesn’t have to be so hard. Fast forward to today, my nephew’s iPad was taken away by his mother because of “too much screen time". And then he stole his mom’s phone to call and report her to me. I had to take my time and explain for him to understand why the iPad was taken away. I reminded him how he’s even been endlessly complaining about his eyes and how he’s been struggling to wake up early to go to school. I further went ahead to explain the repercussions of too much screen time and made him know it’s either he listens to his mom or wears big ugly goggles for the rest of his life. He understood and agreed not to stay on his iPad all day. His mom was actually surprised that for the first time, his son actually listened to someone. So I asked her if she explained to him why she was taking the iPad away, and she said no because she felt he wouldn’t understand which threw me off. ![](https://images.ecency.com/DQmV9UrsmRw4ygL7TC2NzxKypJ37cCsX13x4BH2bcDhH5wS/img_3381.jpg) That statement made me realize that the reason why I was angry at my mom when she told me I couldn’t marry my brother was because she didn’t explain why. I only got to find out in school how marriage actually works and what it even meant. And I know people would say in her defense, she thought I was too young and probably naive and wouldn’t understand. And I think that’s where people get it all wrong when it comes to the younger generation, especially in my part of the world. The world is changing and the understanding of kids isn’t as “little” as we actually think. Kids of today are smarter than we think and would definitely understand if you explain things to them. Anyway, my mom doesn’t know this, but I’m still mad at her for not letting me marry my brother.
