Amma ran inside the house the moment when she saw people staring at her. She was doing something special that she's shy about. Even though she does it well, her heart skips a beat whenever she sees people watching her.
Knocks on the door
Who's that? Amma yelled from the corner of her room.
It's me, Adjua. Why did you run inside like that? We were enjoying your music, she asked, leaning on the door and hoping she could get in.
I have told you countless times that I don't like it when I sing and people stare at me, she responded with a heavy breathing voice.
This time, Amma had no choice than to go out. It was one of the free times in the world. It was the Covid season when everyone was at home and finding what to do to have fun.
The children of the streets were clapping and dancing. They were enjoying Amma's song but Amma doesn't want crowd. All the talented singers in the community came out to show what they've got.
Amma!!! the kids yelled and embraced her.
Almost everyone knew Amma, the daughter of the popcorn seller. Her voice was so soothing that it's enough to get you carried away.
Then, it was a moment to get over stage fright. Even Amma's mum was knocking on the door, persuading her child to come outside and continue her music session.
Amma's mum was never in support of her music career but after her mum saw how much people embraced and love what she does, there was no choice than to support her daughter.
Come outside girl. We are live on Instagram. Take this so you can feel hot and bold, the community youth leader, Kwame hands over a bottle of Lacoco alcohol to Amma.
Quickly, she guzzled the drink to clear her eyes (get tipsy) just like they all say. Playfully, Amma shook her head and stepped out of the house to give the entire community a premium satisfaction.
Yessss! Amma!!! the entire community began to sing praises to her name.
Amma touched down on the stage, grabbed onto the microphone and got singing. She was supposed to sing for ten minutes but they all didn't want her to stop singing and whenever she wants to drop the microphone, they sing praises to her name again so she can continue singing.
Wow! Do you mean that we have some talents here in this community? How come I haven't seen her before? Malik, a talent manager, music producer and son of a wealthy man in the village shows up his interest in Amma's career.
As soon as Amma dropped the microphone, Malik was standing by the stage and held her hands immediately she was about to get off the stage.
I heard that you are Amma. Would you like to take music as your career? Amma nodded her head in approval.
Sure! Everyone here knows that I love to sing and I would love to be as big as Beyoncé someday, so yeah. I hope you do not see me as an ordinary sales girl in the pharmacy nearby, Malik chuckled at her statement.
In the midst of the crowd, Malik held her hands and took her to his mini studio behind the field.
Can you record a song in two hours? Malik started by playing different music beats until Amma found the one that she can jump well on.
Yes! I can sing on this beat. I think it will be easy, the day was stressful. Instead of recording for one hour, Amma recorded her song for two hours but the talent hunt was still going on.
Congratulations on making your first music, Malik shook hands with Amma and they went back to the field where the talent hunt was happening.
They got to the field and shared Amma's new song with everyone. At the end of the hunt, it was a party. Amma's song was the music of the day.
Suddenly, the music stopped. People looked at each other thinking about what stopped the music. Then, Malik grabbed the microphone.
Here is Amma's new song. A bank account number will show on the screen to support her new music, Malik said.
Amma wasn't positive about that. She thought no one will support her but with people's help, Amma made her first million Ghanaian cedis. With that, Amma could join her peers in school again and also further her music career.
One million cedis? Oh my God! She jumped up. She hugged her mother and Malik, her helper.
That fateful day was what changed Amma's life entirely and she thanked Malik and the entire community for standing up for her.
