Standards are free. They're free because it doesn't cost anything to set them. Setting standards. Setting standards in our society throughout the world is probably the most free of cost thing. People love to do. And what people love to do is not always a good thing. Yes, we all should have certain standards regarding certain issues, but as today's topic will aim to discuss, how standards are holding us back in more ways than one. And that is true. While at the same time, a complete lack of standard is not a good thing as well. There should be a realistic balance. Something which is as scarce as rare earth minerals.

So what are standards? You might want to ask what quantifies a certain standard. First, if we try to understand what the standard word means, it is a socially accepted state of anything. Suppose our standards are that our countries will remain independent. It is an expectation that we all have and it is universally accepted. Hence it is standard for a country to do everything in its power to preserve its independence. This is a very vague example. Vague in a sense that this really isn't one of those things that really make our life hard. Which are the types of standards we aim to discuss today. Now if you move to the thick of it, I don't know where you're reading from or what your nationality is. But I would like to assume that you've heard about Asians, namely the Chinese or any of the Southeast Asian countries or the Indian subcontinent. There is a common belief among people around the world that Asians are very good at many more things than Europeans or Americans. For example, it is almost accepted as a common truth that Asians are good at math. And Asians are good with instruments and any other skill in which an Asian specializes. These are standards. Now if they meet an Asian who is not good at math, it will be simply called below standard. That student will be called below standard because the standard is to be good in math and that student is not and just like that standards are degrading our life status just like that. That will give you another example from Asia. It is widely expected that the children will grow up to be doctors and engineers. Can anything else? And it is simply an abomination of the Asian standard. Which is that children will study, always get good grades and then go to med school or engineering. Any student who fails to do so is considered a failure. Because the standard expectation is to get into either med school or engineering. And such high standards where high means expecting lavish things such as the example I just gave you and other things like always getting the best grades in class or else you will not get food at home.
Such standards are imposed by our parents from a small age and we grow up to expect people living up to those same standards. And eventually we judge them through the same lens which we have known to hate all these years. We will be judging other people with the same lens of doctor or engineer while the guy could be an artist or some other profession and this generation upon generation is judging people based on imaginary accomplishments which they think should be common for. Everyone will hold society back because people will be expecting things which they will never get.
High Standards Eventually Go Nowhere
