Cascos de Buceo Antiguos | Antique Diving Helmets

 El buceo, como actividad humana, tiene un origen muy antiguo. Hay pruebas en el museo británico, que datan del siglo **IX a. C.**, donde se observan relieves de buceadores, usando odres de pieles llenos de aire para poder permanecer dentro del agua. Cuando una persona se sumerge en un medio acuático, no puede ver bien. Aprecia todo borroso. Esto ocurre porque el ojo se comporta como **hipermétrope**, focalizando la imagen en un punto detrás de la retina. Este defecto en medio terrestre se corrige con el uso de lentes correctoras, pero debajo del agua, será necesario aislar el ojo del contacto directo con el líquido. Este problema se solucionó con las máscaras o cascos de buceo, donde hay un espacio de aire entre el agua y el ojo. Esto funciona como una lente, haciendo posible que la luz incida en la retina, y no fuera de ella. Solo así podremos ver todo con detalle. >Diving, as a human activity, has very ancient origins. There is evidence in the British Museum, dating back to the **9th century BC**, showing reliefs of divers using air-filled skins to stay underwater. >When a person dives into an aquatic environment, they cannot see well. Everything appears blurry. This occurs because the eye behaves as if it were **farsighted**, focusing the image on a point behind the retina. This defect in terrestrial environments is corrected with the use of corrective lenses, but underwater, the eye must be isolated from direct contact with the liquid. >This problem was solved with diving masks or helmets, where there is an air space between the water and the eye. This works like a lens, allowing light to hit the retina, rather than the outside. Only then can we see everything in detail. En el año 2016, cursé un Entrenamiento Avanzado de Buceo y de Equipamiento Médico Hiperbárico, en **Key Largo**, **Florida**, **Estados Unidos**. En el **Hyperbarics International**, liderado por **Dick Rutkowski**, instructor reconocido por su gran experiencia en la mezcla de gases respirables. El centro esta divido por áreas: un local para la parte docente, otro para la instrucción práctica, donde hay dos cámaras hiperbáricas, y otra área que hace función de museo. En esta, se ofertan ciertos objetos antiguos relacionados con el buceo profesional. Amigos de **Hive Collectors**, hoy les hablaré y compartiré mis fotos, de los cascos de buceo antiguos que ahí se exponen. Es un tema novedoso para muchos, ya que estamos acostumbrados a ver máscaras pequeñas, para el buceo recreativo, pero no estos cascos, que abrazan toda una historia. >In 2016, I completed Advanced Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Equipment Training in **Key Largo**, **Florida**, **United States**. It was at **Hyperbarics International**, led by **Dick Rutkowski**, an instructor renowned for his extensive experience in breathing gas mixing. >The center is divided into areas: a space for teaching, another for practical instruction, where there are two hyperbaric chambers, and another area that serves as a museum. This space displays certain vintage objects related to professional diving. >Friends of **Hive Collectors**, today I'll talk to you and share my photos of the vintage diving helmets on display there. It's a new topic for many, as we're used to seeing small masks for recreational diving, but not these helmets, which encompass a whole history.  En el siglo **XIX**, la escafandra de **Siebe Gorman** tomó relevancia, y el casco de metal, era la parte que despertaba la mayor curiosidad en las personas. Esta recibía el aire, suministrado a través de un sistema de bombeo, con mangueras, desde la superficie. Se fabricaron varios tipos de cascos, con diversas formas y metales. Cristales con formas cuadradas, rectangulares y esféricos, con un grosor adecuado para soportar los efectos de la presión hidrostática. Algunos fueron construidos de cobre y otros de bronce. De esa manera, la cabeza del buzo quedaba bien protegida ante cualquier impacto, y funcionaba como depósito para la mezcla gaseosa. El casco se acoplaba al traje, a través de pernos, para garantizar una mejor seguridad. >In the **19th** century, **Siebe Gorman's** diving suit gained prominence, and the metal helmet was the part that aroused the greatest curiosity. >It received air, supplied through a pumping system with hoses from the surface. Several types of helmets were manufactured, with various shapes and metals. Square, rectangular, and spherical lenses were made of a thickness suitable to withstand the effects of hydrostatic pressure. >Some were made of copper and others of bronze. This way, the diver's head was well protected from any impact and functioned as a reservoir for the gas mixture. The helmet was attached to the suit with bolts to ensure greater safety.     En la actualidad, los coleccionistas amantes del tema buceo, demandan en el mercado la compra de estos cascos. Es la parte más atractiva de la escafandra, y por la calidad de sus materiales, se conservan a pesar del paso del tiempo. Para mí, fue muy gratificante, poder compartir esos días con buzos y personal médico de la marina americana, donde el intercambio de conocimientos, siempre contribuye a ampliar nuestros conocimientos. El buceo se realiza en un entorno único, donde, a nivel fisiológico, se producen cambios diferentes a los que ocurren en tierra. El cuerpo humano está sujeto a leyes físicas que exigen al practicante mantener una adecuada armonía física y, aún más, psicológica. Hablarles de estos cascos de buceo antiguos, es revivir parte de la historia del buceo y sus orígenes, para dejarlos inmortalizados, en algo actual como la **blockchain**.
