Hoy después de 29 años me vi obligada a dar un diagnóstico devastador.Pero no por ser ni médico ni vudú, sino por ser una simple agrónoma, que trabaja en un laboratorio para el análisis químico y físico de los suelos.
Un lugar donde mucha gente viene a verte para consultarte sí sus suelos están "vivos o muertos" y esto por supuesto es solo un eufemismo, porque todos respiran pero la mayoría cree que por solo haber guijarros, raíces de plantas y alguna que otra lombriz de tierra arrastrándose por ahí el suelo no se perturba, y resiste todo lo que vuelques sobre él.
Así es que personas entusiasmadas por la agricultura llegan desde diferentes profesiones a mí : abogados, profesores, electricistas, informáticos, albañiles, estilistas, guagueros, agentes de seguridad, comerciantes, y cuantos más quieras imagínarte, incluido un Chef cubano especializado en comida italiana.
A este último lo atendí mejor que a nadie porque sabe el valor de las hortalizas en nuestro eterno verano, y lo delicioso que sabe unas buenas pastas con un salsa de tomates fresca hecha a mano y no de manera industrial...es solo por poner un ejemplo, porque la verdad es que todos conocemos el valor de los alimentos.
Bueno, pues resultó que este chef me solicitó ayuda para caracterizar un material orgánico que se recolectó de un almacén antiguo donde guardaban animales de pastoreo durante tanto tiempo que se acumuló excremento de chivo por más de 3 metros sobre el nivel del suelo.La idea era que él mismo podía ser reutilizado como abono en una casa de cultivos que tenía preparada para comenzar a sembrar tomates fuera de época y que cuestan bastante caros, pero, debajo del material había fosilizado un fertilizante químico antiquísimo: posiblemente sulfato o cloruro de potasio, que se mezcló con la excreta de los animales y lo contaminó.
Sin tener la menor idea lo utilizó como material de fondo en su casa de cultivo, ignorando que el volúmen de sales que incorporaba al suelo sería demoledor.
Me trajo el material para que se lo evaluará, y le advertí que en esas condiciones ni el más chévere de los espíritus santos lo iba a ayudar...pero le recomendé que antes de sembrar lavara con abundante agua ese suelo y lo mezclará con otros materiales que le ayudarían a disminuir el golpe de sales que estaba saturando el área de siembra.
Lo lavo tres veces pero no utilizó los materiales orgánicos, sembró sus posturas de tomate con mucho apuro y comenzó su fertirrigación.Después estaba muy animado porque solo el 20 porciento de la cosecha se había perdido, pero entonces le pedí que me trajera nuevamen una muestra del suelo para hacer otra caracterización y reevaluar la situación.
Diagnóstico: La C.E (conductividad eléctrica) estaba dos veces más alta de lo requerido para el cultivo, las plantas desarrollarían muy poco su sistema radical y el raquitismo no les dejaría llegar ni al proceso de floración con la condiciones requeridas... sencillamente porque las flores abortarían sufriendo un proceso de Preclamcia.
Conclusión: Debe demoler la plantación, y su casa queda inutilizable hasta que no restaure el equilibrio de los nutrientes en los metros cuadrados que ocupa su instalación.
Me dió tanta pena con este muchacho, me dió dolor todo el trabajo perdido, las inversiones, el esfuerzo por aprender y las ganas de triunfar.
Hace una semana me había traído unas uvas muy dulces y rojas importadas que son extremadamente caras en mi país, como un lindo gesto de buena voluntad por mi ayuda...y ahora yo le estaba dando una noticia fatal.
Me he sentido tan mal, porque técnicamente me siento culpable de la ecatombe, que no solo lo afecta económicamente a él, sino que también que porque el suelo ha salido seriamente perjudicado.
La salinización antrópica tiene consecuencias catastróficas para todo el ecosistema, y recuperarlo sin disponer de recursos agudiza enormemente la cuestión.
Ya veremos qué se hace, cualquier cosa menos perder el enfoque y las esperanzas, porque en cuestión de errores: aprender es la mejor solución.
Por ahora creo que intentaremos movilizar algunas toneladas de turba, un poco de aserrín descompuesto, y otro poco de cáscara de arroz....ya te contaré después cómo irá saliendo todo.

I served the latter better than anyone else because he knows the value of vegetables in our eternal summer, and how delicious good pasta tastes with a fresh tomato sauce made by hand and not industrially... just to give an example, because the truth is that we all know the value of food.
Well, it turned out that this chef asked me for help in characterizing an organic material that was collected from an old warehouse where they kept grazing animals for so long that goat dung accumulated more than 3 meters above ground level. The idea was that it could be reused as fertilizer in a grow house he had prepared to start planting out-of-season tomatoes that are quite expensive, but underneath the material there was a fossilized ancient chemical fertilizer (possibly potassium sulfate or chloride) that mixed with the animals' dung and contaminated it.
Without having the slightest idea, he used it as a base material in his grow house, unaware that the volume of salts he was adding to the soil would be devastating.
He brought me the material for evaluation, and I warned him that in those conditions not even the coolest of holy spirits would help him... but I recommended that before planting he wash the soil with plenty of water and mix it with other materials that would help reduce the salt stress that was saturating the planting area.
He washed it three times but didn't use organic materials. He planted his tomato seedlings in a hurry and began fertigation. Afterward, he was very encouraged because only 20 percent of the crop had been lost, but then I asked him to bring me another soil sample so I could perform another characterization and re-evaluate the situation.
Diagnosis: The EC (electrical conductivity) was twice as high as required for the crop; the plants would develop very little root system, and the stunted growth would prevent them from even reaching the flowering stage under the required conditions... simply because the flowers would abort, suffering from a preeclampsia process.
Conclusion: He must demolish the plantation, and his house will be unusable until he restores the nutrient balance to the square footage his facility occupies.
I felt so sorry for this young man; I felt pain for all the lost work, the investments, the effort to learn, and the desire to succeed.
A week ago, he had brought me some very sweet, imported red grapes that are extremely expensive in my country, as a nice gesture of goodwill for my help... and now I was giving him terrible news.
I felt so bad because, technically, I feel guilty about the disaster, which not only affects him financially, but also because the land has been seriously damaged.
Anthropogenic salinization has catastrophic consequences for the entire ecosystem, and restoring it without resources makes the situation even worse.
We'll see what happens, anything but losing focus and hope, because when it comes to mistakes, learning is the best solution.
For now, I think we'll try to move a few tons of peat, some decomposed sawdust, and some rice husks... I'll let you know later how it all turns out.
