Jesus gave a strong warning in Matthew 26:41: “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
In these last days, it is not enough to pray alone; we must also watch. Watching means being spiritually alert, discerning the times, and guarding against the subtle tricks of the enemy.
- The Call to Watchfulness
Jesus repeatedly told His disciples: “Watch!” (Mark 13:33–37).
To watch is to stay awake spiritually, not to slumber in complacency. The devil prowls like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). A careless believer is an easy target.
- Signs of the Times
The last days are marked by wars, rumors of wars, false prophets, deception, increase of wickedness, and love growing cold (Matthew 24:6–12). The believer must be aware of these realities, not to fear, but to stay ready and anchored in Christ.
- Guarding the Heart
Watching begins with guarding the heart. Proverbs 4:23 says: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Be careful what you allow into your spirit through media, company, or thoughts. A polluted heart cannot discern clearly.
- Staying Awake in Prayer
Prayer and watching go hand in hand. A prayerless Christian is a vulnerable Christian. Jesus told His disciples in Gethsemane to watch and pray, but they slept instead. As a result, they fell into fear and confusion when the trial came.
- Living with Eternity in View
To watch means to live prepared, as if Christ will return at any moment. Matthew 24:44 reminds us: “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” Watching involves holy living, daily repentance, and a readiness to give account at the Master’s return.
💡 Reflection: Are you spiritually alert, or have you become complacent and distracted? Are you watching your heart, your surroundings, and the times?
🔥 Prayer Point: Lord, help me to stay awake in the Spirit. Keep me from spiritual slumber. May I live watchful, prayerful, and ready for Your coming.
