Mi amiga Santa

A Santa la conocí una noche que estaba perdida bajo un aguacero. Llevábamos horas caminando, buscando un sitio especial por aquellos montes pinareños, y ya el frío y el hambre no nos dejaba avanzar en medio de la oscuridad.

I met Santa one night when she was lost in a downpour. We had been walking for hours, looking for a special place through those mountains in Pinar del Río, and already the cold and hunger did not let us advance in the middle of the darkness.

Cuando ya creíamos que tendríamos que acampar entre charcos de agua, que amenazaban con volverse lagos, apareció la luz de una pequeña lámpara de kerosene. Y a ella nos dirigimos como un pequeño grupo de polillas ansiosas de calor.

When we already thought we would have to camp among puddles of water, which threatened to turn into lakes, the light of a small kerosene lamp appeared. And to that light we head like a small group of heat-hungry moths.

Santa nos recibió poniéndose las manos en la cabeza de puro susto. No imaginaba encontrarse a tres personas mojadas como peces a esas horas de la noche frente a la puerta de su pequeña casa de madera.

Santa received us putting his hands on his head out of sheer fright. He did not imagine finding three people wet as fish at that time of night in front of the door of his small wooden house.

Lo primero que hizo fue hacernos pasar y poner a colar un poco de café para todos. No nos preguntó nuestros nombres hasta el día siguiente, cuando nos despertamos, después de haber dormido desperdigados por el piso de su sala. Esa mañana encendió el fogón de leña y entre todos preparamos el desayuno, le brindamos turrón de maní molido, y desde entonces ese fue el dulce preferido de Santa.

The first thing Santa did was usher us in and brew some coffee for everyone. He didn't ask our names until the next day, when we woke up, having slept scattered on his living room floor. That morning he lit the wood stove and together we prepared breakfast, we offered him ground peanut nougat, and since then that was Santa's favorite sweet.

A Santa también le gustan los animales, y en cada visita a su casa siempre había algún gato, cabra o alguna jutía que había impedido que se la comieran los cazadores de la zona.

Santa also likes animals, and on every visit to his house there was always a cat, goat or hutia that had prevented the hunters in the area from eating it.

Algunos amigos aparecen así, en medio de la oscuridad y cuando más se les necesita.

Some friends appear like this, in the midst of darkness and when we need them most.
