El color del desierto

A veces me pregunto, ¿sufre la tierra cuando las nubes pasan, mes tras mes, sin regalarle un poco de lluvia?

Sometimes I wonder, does the earth suffer when the clouds pass, month after month, without giving it a little rain?

A veces la tierra me contesta, pero no con la voz que esperamos escuchar, desde lo más hondo de las raíces de los árboles, o desde el vientre de las montañas y las piedras.

And sometimes the earth answers me, but not with the voice that we expect to hear, from the depths of the roots of the trees, or from the belly of the mountains and stones.

Me habla con la voz de los colores, esos que llegan justo cuando el sol ya se ha hecho a la idea de que tiene que morir. Me habla con contrastes, con texturas, con la luz vibrante del último momento.

The earth speaks to me with the voice of colors, those that arrive just when the sun has already gotten used to the idea that it has to die. It speaks to me with contrasts, with textures, with the vibrant light of the last moment.

Y comprendo que en el desierto, con su total ausencia de lluvias y de nubes, la vida y sus colores bullen del mismo modo en que lo hacen en el medio de una selva, de un bosque, de la inmensa sabana.

And I understand that in the desert, with its total absence of rain and clouds, life and its colors bustle in the same way that they do in the middle of a jungle, a forest, the vast savannah.

Tal vez solo hay que pegar el oído a la tierra, abrir mucho los ojos para después entrecerrarlos de a poco... y tener paciencia... los colores aparecerán poco a poco.

Maybe you just have to put your ear to the ground, open your eyes wide and then narrow them little by little... and be patient... the colors will appear little by little.
