My First...

Good day my people, I will like to talk about my First time in the city. City is like a paradise to anyone who grew up in the village like me. Imagine, back in the village, I only used to read about cities in story books. Going to the city was always my prayer point. You know, the description, the life there was just directly opposite what I was experiencing in the village. We had no electricity, no fine cars in the village. I read all those were abundant in the cities. So, I just wanted the experience as well.

So, the day eventually came. My eldest sister, the only one in the city gave birth and it was all joy. Traditions request my mother be there to take care of the baby for the first month. So, as my mother was making prepation towards her journey, I wouldn't stop crying for her to take me along and she later agreed. So, on that particular day, we had woken around 4am, packing our loads till it fits into two bags and a 10litre keg of palm oil. We left for garage around 5:30 am. So, I couldn't see a lot on road because I slept off. So, when we arrived the city, It was a strange place, I saw lots of things, the crowd was innumerable. I saw lots of cars passing on a single broad road. Everywhere was busy, the traders selling, the road hawkers, the adverts from parks. I became so anxious and confused.

As we were about crossing the road, my mother put the 10 litre keg of palm oil on my head, as she carry the remaining loads. My heart was beating so fast. I was wondering how to cross such a busy road. My eyes was getting cloudy as trailers, buses and countless car kept speeding off. At that point, I started regretting my desire to visit the city. My mother managed to hold my hands, as we tried to run across like this, a truck speedily appeared as if it would run us over. I quickly hijacked my hand from my mother and ran back but I fell and the keg of palm oil burst. It was a scene on the road that year. Palm oil was gushing from the burst keg and flowing. Tears filled my mother's eyes, and I started crying as I saw her looking so helpless. Nobody cared, we got direction of where to get the next bus to our destination. I was so embarrassed. That bus that hurriedly filled up also later had us in traffic for two hours.

So, I wondered in my heart why the writers of those books I was reading only put exciting things about cities but not the the hullabaloo that characterized it. My first time in the city was so stressful, embarrassing and filled with regrets. I however fell in love with cities afterwards.

Thanks for reading. Picture is Meta AI generated.
