Hello, everyone. It took me a long time to find the right words for this piece, as it marks the beginning of a rigorous journey — a journey of sharing the thoughts and emotions I have carried for as long as I can remember, especially around self-identity and my environment.
I grew up immersed in the works of Chinua Achebe. I loved how his writing transported me to a world that existed before the one I was born into. His stories sparked my early interest in identity. I also had the opportunity to live in the eastern parts of Nigeria, where I experienced life close to nature. There, I witnessed the beauty and simplicity that stood in contrast to the fast-paced city life. This experience forms the core of who I am today.
I have many reflections about our changing times. Just like in Kofi Awoonor’s “The Anvil and the Hammer,” I believe in “sewing the old days under our new garments.” Although the metaphor speaks of clothing, it is ultimately about identity — about holding onto our African essence even as we adapt.
True, change is necessary and evolution is essential, but we cannot solve our problems with solutions borrowed from others. I believe in creating balance — one where we move forward without losing pride in who we already are.
My Piece Blends together two contrasting visuals which coexists without one totally eroding the other and as a person, I am so much reflected in this piece.
With my work, I aim to spark up conversations that centers around cultural identity and the future of the African child.
