Kalks Bay🌊
18 July 2025
On this day we had a mission, adventure and explore Simons Town, however on the way to our final destination for the day we wanted to stop at all the fun and fascinating photo-opp places on the way (you cannot take me on holiday and not stop to take photos of everything!) One of our stops was Kalks Bay. There is a fish and seafood restaurant right on the harbor that is quite a popular spot to enjoy a meal and watch the fishing boats come and go. Unfortunately we were not able to eat there this day (We will be back for you Kalky's)
Instead of having an early morning seafood breakfast we ventured off onto the pier and admired all the boats and lighthouse instead. Each boat had so much character and personality, I loved it. All of them so colourful and unique.
It was quite cool walking around here, watching the fishermen get their boats ready, cleaning the decks and fixing the ropes. Outside of the restaurant were also a few guys cleaning and hanging out fish to be dried. This, of course, attracted a lot of nosey seagulls to see if they could steal a tasty treat.
I just loved the vibrant fun colours of the place, doesn't it look like something out of a children's story book?
We walked all the way out on the pier because my husband wanted to see the lighthouse up-close. On the side of it has 1919 built in so I think it has been standing for quite some time. It was a bit battered and worn from the constant beatings it must get from the ocean waves and salty water yet still stood tall, ready to warn any ship coming in of the land it sits on.
On the opposite side stood a little green and white lighthouse as well.
We stood out there with the lighthouse for the longest time, just enjoying the view of the vast ocean before us. Listening to the waves crash on the shore behind us and enjoying the peaceful salty Seabreeze hitting our faces. There is truly something so incredibly magical about the ocean and the peace it brings.
Right next door to Kalky's was another seafood restaurant, this one looked a bit fancier. We spotted a window cleaner on the outside cleaning the large windows however as fast as he was cleaning, the waves were crashing right under him, spraying up a ton of salt wat onto his clean windows. It felt like the equivalent of watching a person sweeping leaves in one direction as the wind blows them in the other... almost a pointless task.
I love exploring hidden away place like this, you never really know what (or who) you are going to find to explore. Like these adorable seals sunbathing near the fishing boats. Oh it was such a special treat to stumble into these guys to get some fun photos. (Don't stress, we stayed at a far distance, not getting close at all. I snapped my photos and then we left them alone. You will not win against those teeth!!)
I could not resist having a portrait shoot with these characters though. The one stayed asleep the whole time, barely moving, the other though, was posing so nicely for me. He sat up and pointed his nose to the sun and showed off his flippers. He even scratched his side for a bit before flopping down on his back to bake his stomach in the sun.
It was such a treat to be able to see these magnificent creatures so close!
Again though, they are still extremely wild animals, if you come across them, do not get close!!
Look at that gorgeous pose!
Overall it was such a lovely detour to our final destination for the day and we all had an absolute blast seeing all the fishing boats with their unique names and shapes and all the personality that comes with spending a lifetime at sea. (I am sure those boats can tell so many stories) We got to meet some sweet fishermen and two sleepy seals. A perfect stop to take in the stillness of the ocean and slow down a bit before carrying on with the holiday adventures.
I hope today you can find a moment to have as much peace that this seal has baking in the sun. Find a moment to be outside and enjoy nature, even for 5 minutes. To escape the hustle and bustle of life, even just for a moment.
