Yesterday, I enjoyed serving vegetarian Asian cuisine and drinking beer at a local night market. A phrase "Tanoshii Shigoto" (Work with Fun, or playful work) suddenly popped into my mind. Yes, that's right, enjoyable work does exist. This made me ponder about what work really is, and how one can find work that is truly enjoyable.
While it might not be the case everywhere, I feel that especially in Japan, there is an image that "work is a chore, and money is the compensation you receive for enduring it". Why is work regarded in this way? What is work?
About ten years ago, I attended a poetry reading for a book release with a friend in Vienna. I remember I was thinking, "Being a poet is a profession, and writing a poem is a work too". It might be harder to make money than being a company employee though.
It's a simple thing, but in society, you can receive money by doing things that make others happy. I often tell my daughter, "Money is like an 'thanks ticket' or 'support vote'. I'm still not quite sure about it, and learning about it through experiments." My daughter and I sometimes go to the market together, providing food and goods that customers might enjoy, and go through the process of receiving money in return.
What I consider as a chore might be something that other people also do not want to do, and there is a chance to earn money. However, there are also things that I find fun even if others consider them a chore, and things that make me and others happy by providing value. There actually exists work that is fun and can make money. For example, in my case, I enjoy cooking, and my customers are willing to pay me probably because they find it troublesome to cook vegan Asian cuisine at home. Or some of them want to encourage me. I'm really happy to receive this kind of money.
I want to continue exploring ways to earn money while having fun. There might be something hidden in the areas that I am good at and enjoy, but others don't.

昨日、地元の夜のマーケットで、ビールを飲みながら、お客さんにベジタリアン・アジアンな食事を提供していて、ふと「たのしいしごと」というフレーズが頭に浮かびました。そうそう、楽しい仕事ってあるんです。そんなこんなで仕事ってなんだろう、楽しい仕事ってどうやって見つけたらよいのだろうと書いてみることにしました。
世界でもそうかもしれませんが、日本では「仕事は苦行で、がまんの対価としてお金を受け取ること」というイメージがあるように思います。なんでなのだろう？そもそも仕事ってなんなんだ？
Googleで調べてみると「職業や業務として、すること」とのこと。さらに職業について調べてみると「生計を維持するための生業」といった説明が出てきます。現代ではお金を使って生活するので、お金を手に入れるための生業ということになり、時にはやりたくないこともしないといけないって感じになるのでしょうか。
でもそれは本当？？？高度成長期に大量に必要とされたサラリーマンを生産するため、指示に従う国民を生産するための学校教育や社会での刷り込みや、同調圧力もありそうな気がします。「いい大学を出ていい会社に入る」「まじめにしっかり社会で働いて（≒ 会社員をして）、時には嫌な思いをしても、自立しなければならない、家族がいれば養わなければならない」「俺も苦労してるんだからお前も苦労しろ」・・・みたいな。やだな。
10年くらい前に、友人とウィーンで詩人の出版記念の朗読会に参加したのですが、そのときに「詩人って職業もあるんだなあ」と思ったのを今でもよく覚えています。会社員よりもお金はもらいにくいかもしれないけれど、詩人になったって、何になったっていいんです。
とても単純なことですが、社会では他の人が喜んでくれることをするとお金をもらえます。子供には「お金は arigato ticket みたいなもんかな、母さんもまだよくわかんなくていろいろ試してる」と言っています。マーケットにも時々一緒に行って、お客さんが喜んでくれそうなものを提供して、お金をもらうというプロセスを一緒に体験しています。
私にとっての苦行は他の人もやりたくないことの可能性が高く、お金にはなると思うのですが、「他の人にとっては苦行でも私には楽しいこと」「価値を提供して私も他の人もうれしいこと」は探してみるとあるので、楽しくてお金をもらえること（仕事？）は実はあるんですよね。たとえば、私の場合、料理が好きで、でもお客さんはビーガンのアジア料理を家で料理するのはめんどうで、お金をもらえます。
そんなこんなで楽しくお金をもらう方法を探求していきたいです。得意で楽しくできて、でも他の人にとってはそうでもないところ・・・に何かが眠っていそうです。
