Greetings of the day,
Today, a case came to light in ICU which again explained the importance of Infection Control to us. The patient's head and neck surgery was performed recently and was kept in ICU for post-operative monitoring. In view of his position, the Central Venus catheter was inserted. The first few days were fine, but gradually the patient started complaining of fever and shivering. Blood culture was sent in which Gram-Negative bacteria was confirmed and we were feared CLABSI.

As soon as the patient was confirmed CLABSI, we immediately launched Line Removal and Targeted Antibiotics. But 2 days later, redness, swelling and light pusss were observed at the patient's surgical site. In the Wound Swab Culture, the same bacteria came out in blood. It proved that Systemic BloodStream Infection has also affected the surgical site like secondary infection. That is, CLABSI had now taken the form of SSI.

This situation was very serious for us because now the healing of surgical wounds was slowing down and the patient had to keep more time in the ICU. This case also made it clear that the infection from the central line is not limited to blood just, it can spread throughout the body and can seriously affect the wounds of surgery like surgery. If it is not taken care of in time, it can turn into a life-threatening position like sepsis.
After this incident, today I kept a small but very important training session with my nursing team. In this, we discussed the importance of all the apptic non-touch techniques (Antt), Daily Line Assessment, Dressing Protocols and the importance of Documentation of Catheter Care. All staff were explained that CLABSI Prevention should not only be the responsibility of the doctor, but should be part of the daily practice of every nurse. We have to handle the Central Line of every surgical patient very carefully so that such a situation can be avoided in future.
