Magic Reflect and A Surprise Win - Splinterlands Social Media Challenge

There's something satisfying about watching an underdog beat the odds and come out on top or watching someone come from behind to score a sneak victory. Well, if you like that kind of excitement, then you'll want to read about the amazing Splinterlands match that I won this weekend.

The Odds Were Against Me

And as soon as I saw my opponent's lineup, I knew this was going to be a tough fight. As you can see, my opponent was playing with a level 2 archon, but I only had a level 1 archon. On top of that, my opponent had several units that I didn't have, such as Shock Trooper. In addition to being out-leveled, my team was outnumbered. I fielded only 4 different units, while my opponent put 6 different units into play. starting lineup.png

A Glimmer of Hope

Things looked bleak, but I I trusted that my team would be able to generate an amazing synergy to win the match. The first part of my synergy was the plus 1 speed buff that Cryptic provides. This ensured that I was able to attack first with my monsters. On top of that, Rune Arcanist has the Weaken ability which lowers the health of all enemy units by 1. Lowering all of the opponent's health and being able to attack first turned out to be an absolutely massive advantage. In the very first move of the game, I was able to take out my opponent's Daigendark Suveyor in a single hit.

In the third attack of the second round, my Rune Arcanist scored a one-hit knockout on the opponent's Moxian Rebel.

Just a few seconds later, my Daarg Deablast landed a final blow against the opponent's Conclave Artificer.

A Temporary Setback

At this point, everything seemed to be going according to plan. It wasn't even finished with the first round, and I had already whittled down my opponent's team. Instead of 4 versus 6, I now had an advantage with 4 of my units against 3 of their units. But... things were about to change. In one single attack, the opponent's Shock Trooper used its powerful 5 magic attack to instantly eliminate my Giant Alpine Skink. 😢 Giant Alpine Skink is one of my favorite cards, and it was a tragedy to loose my tank before the end of the first round, but the rest of my team wasn't going to give up.

The Plan Comes Together

At the end of the first round, my opponent's Water Diviner targeted my Daigendark Surveyor who reflected the magic attack back and caused Water Diviner to loose some health. I got an unexpected benefit when my opponent's Shock Trooper triggered the Shock ability and dealt one damage to all their units and took the Water Diviner out of the fight for me. 😁

The Shock Trooper then launched a 5 damage magic attack against my Daigendark Surveyor who promptly reflected 3 magic damage right back at him and knocked him out of the fight. image.png

At this point, the tables turned. Instead of ME being outnumbered, it was now my opponent who was outnumbered. My Rune Arcanist and Daarg Deadblast double teamed my opponent's Abyssal Elemental and secured the victory.

Analysis

As I reflect back on the match, I realize there were a couple factors that helped me secure victory. Being able to attack first and lowering the opponent's health by 1 was an absolutely massive advantage. If I wouldn't have lowered the opponent's health, I probably wouldn't have got to score that initial first victory against the opponent's Daigendark Surveyor. Magic Reflect was absolutely essential to the victory as well. It considerably reduced the health of my opponent's Water Diviner and scored the final blow against Shock Trooper. Without even lifting a finger, my Daigendark Surveyor directly contributed to the downfall of at least 2 opponent's units.
