There are ideas so absurd that they become genius. Especially when we talk about the world that Anime can deliver...

*Nyaight of the Living Cat* is exactly that.
An anime that takes the classic zombie movie formula and replaces it with... cats. Yes, *cats*. Those furry, fluffy felines that have dominated the internet for the past 15 years now play the role of villains in a global apocalypse.
Based on the manga created by [Hawkman](https://www.mangaupdates.com/author/k26qxy8/hawkman) (writer) and [Mecha-Roots](https://www.mangaupdates.com/author/i3a4qwz/mecha-roots) (artist), *Nyaight of the Living Cat* is a direct parody of the classic *Night of the Living Dead* by [George A. Romero](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_A._Romero), but with a bizarre twist: instead of devouring brains, the “zombies” here are cats that infect humans with their overwhelming cuteness. Whoever touches them transforms into a being completely dominated by irrational love for cats.
Is the idea absurd? Yes. Does it work? Surprisingly, yes.

The story follows **Kunagi**, a survivor trying to resist the temptation of petting cats while fleeing through a devastated world. He’s a serious character with past traumas related to loss and feline domination. That’s where the fun is: everything around him is treated with *extreme seriousness*, as if we were watching *Attack on Titan*, but the enemy is a kitten saying “meow”.

Kunagi could easily be mistaken for characters from other intense action stories, like **Levi Ackerman** from [*Shingeki no Kyojin*](https://myanimelist.net/character/45627/Levi) or even **Guts** from [*Berserk*](https://myanimelist.net/character/305/Guts), because of his constantly serious expression and stoic behavior. The difference? Here, he doesn’t wield a giant sword he’s just trying not to pet a cat with big eyes and soft fur.
#### Direction, Art, and Soundtrack
The anime’s direction achieves something difficult: maintaining a serious tone without falling into ridicule. The framing is well thought out, with dramatic angles reminiscent of works like *Tokyo Ghoul* or *Ajin*. The tense soundtrack gives the sensation of a true horror film, which creates a hilarious contrast with the feline threat.
It’s impossible not to laugh when we see a cute cat slowly walking down the street, surrounded by fog, as if it were a legendary monster.
Mecha-Roots’ art deserves praise here. The cats' designs are intentionally adorable, with big shiny eyes and soft fur everything that makes a cat irresistible.
This makes the characters' dilemma even funnier resisting cuteness has become a matter of survival.

Despite the humor and nonsensical concept, *Nyaight of the Living Cat* offers a subtle (or not so subtle) critique of the modern cat cult and how *our relationship with pets has become almost religious*. There’s also a critique of how people become prisoners of their own desires and impulses a theme tackled more heavily in works like *Parasyte* or *Devilman Crybaby*. Kunagi, by resisting contact with the cats, represents the struggle against modern addictions not just the addiction to cute animals, but also against emotional manipulation by media and the dependence on easy affection. *It may sound like an exaggeration*, but anyone who’s watched a cat video on YouTube knows the power they have over us.

Highly recommended for fans of smart satires and works that play with established genres. Also, if you love cats... maybe this anime will make you think twice before petting a stray on the street.
#### Personal rating: 8/10, original, funny, and uncomfortably real at times.

It’s easy to compare this anime with other satires like [Pop Team Epic](https://myanimelist.net/anime/35860/Poputepipikku) or [*Detroit Metal City*](https://myanimelist.net/anime/3701/Detroit_Metal_City), but *Nyaight of the Living Cat* stands out by maintaining a **serious visual balance**. That makes it almost an *experimental work*, where the contrast between form and content creates the humor.
**Those expecting a deep plot will be disappointed.**
The story is simple, episodic, and always revolves around the same dilemma to resist or not to the cats.
But that’s not a flaw it’s the point. The anime aims to explore this concept to the fullest, and it does so with competent direction and sharp humor.
*Nyaight of the Living Cat* is not for everyone. Those expecting something traditional, with character development and complex narrative, might not find what they’re looking for here. But for those who enjoy crazy ideas, dark humor, and solid technical execution, this is a hidden gem of the season.
