（日本語は下の方にあります） 【ENG】 I have not been able to write about the many travel memories I have in my head, thinking that one day I would write about them in a blog, but I am going to slowly output them from now on. I went on solo trips abroad and traveled a lot with friends in Japan, so I will keep a record of those trips before I forget them. It would be voluminous if I tried to summarize the entire itinerary, and I can only pin one thing, so I decided to write down my favorite places for each spot as I go. It motivates me to write when I think that maybe someday my son will see it.

Now, I had decided from the beginning which places I would write about. In August 2009, I went on my first trip abroad alone and this is where I spent my first night. I didn't speak the language fluently, I didn't know what was right or wrong, I was so nervous, and I felt crushed by anxiety. But I also had high hopes for the journey that was about to begin. This is where my experience abroad began, and I wanted to make it my first article. Jericho Beach" in Vancouver, Canada. I still remember it vividly and it is a place I will never forget.

✈︎ What is Jericho Beach?

Jericho Beach is a sandy beach located in the West Point Grey neighborhood, overlooking English Bay with a panoramic view of downtown Vancouver and the North Shore Mountains if you look toward West Vancouver. Jericho Beach is a quiet residential area about 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver by bus, and is a popular recreational spot for local residents. It is a place where few tourists come all the way from central Vancouver. It is a quiet and peaceful place with few people, which suited me very well. There are some theories about the origin of the name, but it is said that “Jerry's Cove” was built in the 19th century by “Jerry” who was a sawmill owner in this area, and the name ‘Jericho’ was derived from “Jerry's Cove”. Knowing this history, you can feel that it is not only a beautiful beach, but also a place that was created by the combination of people's lives and the currents of the times.

✈︎ Youth hostel is my first experience

The reason I came here was because of the youth hostel “HI Vancouver Jericho Beach” where I was staying. It looks like it is still there. There is a similar hostel downtown, but it was more expensive, so I decided to stay here. I used youth hostels for all accommodations on this trip. I think I was in the groove when I read Kotaro Sawaki's Midnight Express and longed to be a backpacker. I will write about it another time, but now I have a body that cannot sleep in a shared room like a dormitory. I guess that means I was young. I remember being relieved when I arrived there after taking the skytrain and bus from the airport, map in hand. I was glad I didn't get into trouble because I was an amateur traveler to look at. At check-in, I struggled with the fast English, but managed to complete the formalities and went to my room. There were other travelers there from Europe and Asia, and we had to share the same space. I had never used a shared room in Japan before, and I was nervous and unsure of what to expect, so I quickly left the room and spent the entire time alone. Socializing with other travelers is one of the best parts of traveling, but it was impossible for me at the time. I guess it was a little better at the end of the trip.

✈︎ Unforgettable sunsets

As soon as you leave the youth hostel, you can go right out to the ocean. That is Jericho Beach. When I arrived at the beach, the sunset was already starting. There are couples on the beach, people enjoying conversation with friends, and like me, a few people gazing at the sea alone. Even in the evening, there are few people and it is quiet and peaceful. The view from Jericho Pier was great, it was damaged in the 2022 storm but was repaired and reopened in 2025. Thank goodness. I don't need words. I watched the ocean until it was completely dark.

✈︎ What I felt in this land

My experience in Jericho Beach was an important start for me as a solo traveler. My first youth hostel, my first conversation abroad, and an unforgettable sunset. Everything was a fresh experience with a mixture of anxiety and anticipation, and it certainly made me realize that I was “abroad”. You don't need any special skills to come to this place. It is not a big deal. Just moving or not moving when you want to go will determine whether you get there or not. I thought, "There are a lot of things like that in this world. I think about it a lot, but this place made me think that I want to act as soon as I think of it and live with light footwork. The scenery and feelings I had at that time are the driving force for me when I take any action.

Jericho Beach is not just a beautiful tourist destination, it is my “solo travel origin”. If you have a chance to visit Vancouver, you should definitely watch the sunset at Jericho Beach. I am sure the view will make your trip even more special. This Canadian trip will continue for three weeks from here. I have so many memories and I will write about them again next time. 【日本語】 これまでの旅行の記憶が頭の中にたくさんあって、いつかブログにしたいなと思いながら書けないでいましたが、これからゆっくりアウトプットしていこうと思います。海外に一人旅に出たり、友人と国内旅行にたくさん行ったりしたので、その記録を忘れないうちにしっかり残していきます。旅程全てをまとめようとするとボリュームがありますし、ピンは一つしか打てないので、スポットごとに好きな場所をその都度書くことにしました。 もしかしたらいつか息子が見る時が来るかもと思うと書くモチベーションもあがりますね。

さて、はじめに書く場所は最初からここにしようと決めていました。2009年の8月、私が初めて一人で海外旅行に行き、最初の夜を迎えた場所です。言葉もろくに話せず、右も左も分からず、緊張しまくっていて、不安に押しつぶされそうだった。でもこれから始まる旅への期待もあった。私の海外経験の始まりの場所で、最初の記事にしたいと思っていました。 カナダ・バンクーバーの「ジェリコビーチ」そこで眺めた夕日。今でも鮮明に覚えていて、忘れられない場所です。

✈︎ ジェリコビーチとは？

ジェリコビーチ（Jericho Beach）は、バンクーバーのWest Point Grey地区にある砂浜で、イングリッシュ湾越しにバンクーバーのダウンタウンが一望でき、ウエストバンクーバーの方を見ればノースショア山脈を望むことができます。ダウンタウンからはバスで30分ほどとの閑静な住宅街エリアで、市民の憩いの場として親しまれています。旅行者でバンクーバー中心部からわざわざ来る人はあまりいなそうな場所です。人が少なく静か、とても落ち着ける場所で私にはとても合っていました。 名前の由来には諸説があるようですが、19世紀にこの地で製材所を営んでいた「ジェリーさん（Jerry）」が建てた作業所「Jerry’s Cove」がなまって「Jericho」になった、なんて話があります。 そんな歴史を知ると、ただの美しいビーチというだけでなく、人々の暮らしや時代の流れが重なってできた場所だと感じられます。

✈︎ 初めて泊まったユースホステル

ここに来た理由は宿泊先であるユースホステル「HI Vancouver Jericho Beach」があったからです。まだあるみたいですね。ダウンタウンにも同様のホステルはありますが、値段が高かったのでこちらにしました。この旅の宿は全てユースホステルを使っています。沢木耕太郎の深夜特急を読んで、バックパッカーに憧れていた時のノリだったと思います。また別の機会に書きますが、もう私はドミトリーのような共同部屋では寝泊まりできない体になってしまいました。ことのきは若かったということですね。

空港からスカイトレインとバスを乗り継ぎ、地図を片手にたどり着いたときはほっとしたのを覚えています。見るからに素人丸出しだったので、事件に巻き込まれなくてよかったです。チェックインでは早口の英語に苦戦しつつも、なんとか手続きを終えて部屋へ。そこにはヨーロッパやアジアから来た旅行者たちがいて、同じ空間で過ごすことになります。日本でも共同部屋なんて使ったことがなく、勝手も分からず、緊張もしていたので、そそくさと部屋を出てずっと一人で過ごしていました。旅行者同士の交流が旅の醍醐味でもありますが、当時の私には無理でした。旅の最後の方は少しマシだったかな。

✈︎ 忘れられない夕日

ユースホステルを出るとすぐに海に出ることができます。そこがジェリコビーチです。ビーチに着いた時にはすでに夕焼けが始まりかけていました。 海岸にはカップル、友人との会話を楽しんでいる人、私と同じように一人で海を眺める人がちらほら、夕刻どきも人は少なく静かで、心が穏やかになります。 Jericho Pierという桟橋からの景色は最高でした。2022年の暴風雨で破損してしまったけど、2025年に修復され、再オープンしたそうです。よかった。 言葉はいらない。 すっかり暗くなるまで海を見ていました。

✈︎ この土地で感じたこと

ジェリコビーチでの体験は私にとって一人旅の大切なスタートでした。 初めてのユースホステル、初めての海外での会話、そして忘れられない夕日。すべてが不安と期待の入り混じった新鮮な体験で、確かに自分が「海外に来たのだ」と実感させてくれました。 この場所に来るのに特別なスキルは要らない。大したことではない。行きたいと思った時に動くか動かないかだけで、そこに辿り着くか否かが決まります。世の中そんなことがたくさんあるよなと思いました。色々考えてしまいますが、思い立ったらすぐ行動、フットワーク軽く生きていきたいなと思わせてくれた場所です。 この時の景色と気持ちは、私が何か行動を起こす時の原動力になっています。

ジェリコビーチは、ただの美しい観光地ではなく、私にとって「一人旅の原点」です。 バンクーバーを訪れる機会があれば、ぜひジェリコビーチで夕日を見てみてください。きっと、その景色は旅の思い出をより特別なものにしてくれるはずです。 このカナダの旅はここから3週間続きます。たくさんの思い出があるので、また次の機会に書きたいと思います。読んでいただきありがとうございました。
