Behind every gateway you will find a part of history. Since the 11th century, Hohensalzburg Fortress has developed into one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe, covering an area of about 32,000 m². The exhibitiob focuses on the history of Salzburg in the Middle Age. The middle Ages lastet from around AD 500 to about 1500.
To reach the fortress, in just a few seconds, you can take the funicular railway from the old town, which is Austria's oldest funicular railway still in operation. It takes visitors up to the fortress hill since 1892.
Here is the Regency Chambers, the state rooms constructed around 1500. This princely rooms consist of three main areas, a large hall, the golden hall and a small library. The amazing furnishingshow that the Fortress served not only as a refuge in time crisis, but time and again as the sovereigns residence.
