A Question
Before I get into the numbers, a brief sidestep into the "whys" and which forms of entertainment we select. Youtube or video consumption can be a passive form of entertainment - we react to the material and it may make us think some but it doesn't require much of us or allow interaction. Livestreams offer some interaction, but it can be strongly reactionary form of entertainment with some drawbacks. Video games could take up page of discussion and can range from a casual form of entertainment to time destroying lifestyles. Books and reading is a more active form of entertainment, that requires more exertion from the participants, both the faculties of reason and imagination. Graphic novels offer a mid point between a book and a video - with the visual element and a generally compact form of storytelling.
Novels and graphic novels when done well can create a sense of immersion and wonder, and form a sense of attachment between the reader and the characters; and also the worlds those characters exist in. It is no wonder that series often top the lists of bestsellers, readers want that immersion to persist. Indie comic book and graphic novels are no different - Kamen America has built a loyal readership by creating more Kamen America; Tim Lim and Mark Pellegrini are now into the double digits with Kamen America including a new manga styled retelling of the origin story. You can see the newest offering on Kickstarter - Kamen America Alpha.
Rippaverse Comics a new comic book publishing house founded by Eric July, is a somewhat ambitious undertaking. The Rippaverse is building out a universe with several comic book titles taking place in the same world. Each issue then connects in some way to the other books, while each issues strives to be a stand alone story. Rippaverse Comics is somewhat reminiscent of Valiant Comics - with the major difference in delivery. Rather than go to a comic book or book store, readers purchase the graphic novels directly from the Rippaverse - during collection campaigns or afterwards from the webstore, and the books are shipped directly the readers. You can see the collection campaign for Yaira #3 from the Soska Sisters at https://rippaverse.com/collections/yaira-3/
The Rippaverse also offers a pre-order and fulfillement service it calls Rippasend. Youtuber Yellow Flash and artist Jon Dillard currently are offering their "Mighty Golden Patriot". The campaign has raised $83,667 from 3,108 preorders. You may view the campaign at https://rippasend.com/campaign/golden-patriot/
