El día antes de la cirugía: preparando a Amelie para su operación. Ayer fue la intervención quirúrgica de Amelie, sin embargo, voy paso a paso con ustedes sin perder detalles. _{*Click [here](#english) to read in english *} Aunque este post va a contar sobre el día antes de la intervención, es importante que les diga que todo salió bien, como lo esperábamos. A ver, pero como fue el proceso preoperatorio para esta operación de las piernas de mi hija? Lo más importante a tener en cuenta por mi parte al preparar a un niño para un procedimiento médico de cualquier tipo es: "explicarle bien". Saber que le espera una íntervención quirúrgica puede ser muy angustiante y traer una gran ansiedad. Inclusive si es algo que perciben como positivo y que ha sido esperado. Ese fue el caso para nosotros. Cuando Amelie supo que ya había fecha fijada saltó feliz sobre mi y vivió una ilusión muy grande. A lo mejor algunos de ustedes saben lo que significa que a menudo te pregunten, porque caminas así? Cuando te van a operar? "cuidado te vas a caer". Y ni hablar de las personas que se refirieron a mi abordandome como si no estuviera pendiente de este tema de salud. Confieso que fui muy selectiva para escoger a quien explicarle: no, no se soluciona con botas ortopédicas ni twister, si, ya la lleve al traumatologo en el hospital ortopédico, no, no se puede operar aun, no tiene la edad ósea requerida, si, ya es momento pero mi seguro no cubre algo así, ya me estoy ocupando. Y bueno, ella siempre ha escuchado todo esto, por fortuna, tiene un médico que siempre la ha animado y le ha hecho ver todos los aspectos positivos una vez realizado el procedimiento. El día de la última consulta tomamos una foto, ese día también le tomaron fotos y videos del"antes" para comparar con el "después". Cada vez que asistió a su consulta resultó ser un caso de estudio médico para los estudiantes del postgrado de traumatologia y especializandose en miembros inferiores, así trabajan en este equipo del Hospital Ortopédico Infantil y vale destacar que tienen un profesor excelente, que además descubrí que es muy científico. Ya faltando un día para el "gran día" estuvimos desde las 7 de la mañana en el hospital para la evaluación preoperatoria. No hubo sorpresas para mi, Amelie es la tercera de mis hijos a la que tenemos que corregir este tema congenito. El protocolo del hospital para la atención de los casos es magnífico. Llegas a admisión y te atienden muy bien y te refieren con una licenciada que actúa como protocolo que te va guiando paso a paso entre un servicio y otro. El primero, el laboratorio, aprovechando de obtener un tubito de sangre adicional para el tipiaje en banco de sangre. Luego nos tocó la revisión de pediatría, ya a las 8 estábamos esperando el turno, y seguidamente la evaluación de anestesiologia. A las 10:30 habríamos estado libres, pero, por algún motivo que nunca me quedó muy claro, los resultados de laboratorio se retrasaron muchísimo y alrededor de la una de la tarde fue que estuvieron listos para la revisión de los especialistas. El día fue increible por los resultados y objetivos obtenidos, pero debo confesar que luego de las 12:30 del medio día, esperando, me puse de muy mal humor. Nos despedimos del proceso preoperatorio pasando nuevamente por la admisión para recibir unos documentos y una tarjeta que lleva el control de los pasos que se van siguiendo. Al salir del hospital, fuimos, tal y como le prometimos a comprar cositas para manualidades y arte que le habíamos prometido que contaría con ellos para pasar el tiempo en su reposo y fue lo que les mostró en el [video de unboxing que publicamos en el post anterior]( ) y que si no han visto pueden pasar a entretenerse un poco con las ocurrencias de Amelie. Esta niña está muy consentida con todo esto, final de la tarde nos hizo llevarla a buscar una merienda en un lugar muy peculiar que le encanta porque la decoración es de Kuromi, Kitty y compañía. Lo malo es que de dos cositas que pidió, una de ellas, el postrecito que llaman muchies estaba divino, pero por otra parte, pidió una bebida que tuviera patilla, y le pareció espantosa, porque no le importó que la combinación fuera de patilla, leche, leche de coco y te, solo porque era la única que tenía su fruta favorita, patilla. Nadie en la casa quiso terminar de tomarsela. ### Cierre del Día Intentamos cenar temprano para descansar, pero la ansiedad y el cansancio hicieron que me fuera a la cama muy tarde. Although this post is about the day before the surgery, it's important to tell you that everything went well, as we expected. So, how did the preoperative process for my daughter's leg surgery go? The most important thing for me to keep in mind when preparing a child for any kind of medical procedure is to "explain it well." Knowing that surgery is coming up can be very distressing and cause a lot of anxiety. Even if it's something they perceive as positive and have been looking forward to. That was the case for us. When Amelie found out that a date had been set, she jumped on me with joy and was very excited. Perhaps some of you know what it means to be asked, "Why do you walk like that? When are you going to have surgery? Be careful, you're going to fall." Not to mention the people who approached me as if I wasn't aware of this health issue. I confess that I was very selective in choosing who to explain it to: no, it can't be solved with orthopaedic boots or twister, yes, I already took her to the traumatologist at the orthopaedic hospital, no, she can't have surgery yet, she doesn't have the required bone age, yes, it's time, but my insurance doesn't cover something like that, I'm already taking care of it. Well, she has always listened to all this, fortunately, she has a doctor who has always encouraged her and made her see all the positive aspects once the procedure has been performed. On the day of the last consultation, we took a photo, and that day they also took photos and videos of the "before" to compare with the "after". Every time she attended her consultation, it turned out to be a medical case study for postgraduate students of traumatology specialising in lower limbs. That's how they work in this team at the Children's Orthopaedic Hospital, and it's worth noting that they have an excellent professor, who I also discovered is very scientific. With only one day to go before the "big day," we were at the hospital at 7 a.m. for the preoperative evaluation. There were no surprises for me. Amelie is the third of my children to have this congenital condition corrected. The hospital's protocol for handling these cases is magnificent. You arrive at admissions and they treat you very well and refer you to a licensed professional who acts as a protocol guide, taking you step by step from one service to another. The first stop was the laboratory, where they took advantage of the opportunity to obtain an additional tube of blood for typing at the blood bank. Then it was time for the paediatric check-up. By 8 o'clock we were waiting for our turn, followed by the anaesthesiology assessment. We should have been free by 10:30, but for some reason that was never quite clear to me, the laboratory results were delayed considerably and it was around 1 o'clock in the afternoon before they were ready for the specialists to review. The day was incredible because of the results and goals achieved, but I must confess that after 12:30 p.m., while waiting, I became very moody. We said goodbye to the preoperative process, going through admission again to receive some documents and a card that keeps track of the steps being followed. When we left the hospital, we went, as we had promised, to buy some craft and art supplies that we had promised her she could use to pass the time while she was resting, and that's what we showed you in the [unboxing video we posted in the previous post]( ). At the end of the afternoon, she made us take her to get a snack at a very peculiar place that she loves because it is decorated with Kuromi, Kitty and company. The problem is that of the two things she ordered, one of them, the little dessert called muchies, was delicious, but on the other hand, she ordered a drink with watermelon in it, and she thought it was awful, because she didn't care that the combination was watermelon, milk, coconut milk and tea, just because it was the only one that had her favourite fruit, watermelon. No one in the house wanted to finish it. Finally, on the day before the operation, we wanted and needed to have an early dinner so we could go to bed early, but even though we ate at a reasonable hour, I personally went to bed very late and have had three very difficult days and feel like a zombie.
