Remembering Alma's 15th: An Open Letter to My Friends

I was organizing my boxes of memories, looking for something I never found, but fortunately I found some snapshots from the 15th birthday party of a dear friend of mine. My friend Lemaire's eldest daughter turned 15 in August last year, and they organized a very intimate party with family and close friends to celebrate this brilliant girl's excitement about turning 15. _{*Para leer en español, directamente [AQUI](#spanish)*} I looked for the photos we took with our cameras that day and remembered how beautiful everything was, truly beautiful, nothing more, nothing less, without excess but with attention to every unique detail.  I truly loved being at a celebration so full of good taste and style that faithfully represented the guest of honor, a girl who knows what she wants and how she wants it, and who also knows how to express it in the most assertive way I have ever seen. I wanted to say this, totally, I feel very happy to highlight it. But, really, now I'm going to tell you what I was thinking most about when I remembered this party: Watching Alma grow up, just like her brother Tomás, most of the time from a great distance, and yet, deeply close, with a bond that has nothing to do with blood, but with the ideals of young people who dreamed of a different world and with a commitment and love to accompany each other with our hearts and morally in raising the children of both families, knowing that we could count on each other and knowing that it was important for her, her parents, and her brother that we were present at that moment.  What I felt and feel again at this moment is a deep gratitude for having felt part of them, for having cultivated a friendship of so many long years and, despite not seeing each other often, for having the certainty that each time will be the same as always. In the days leading up to the party, I had the photos at hand and was planning to make a post. It would be a post about a celebration with family and friends, it would be the experience of a party, it would be a story about what we danced and what we ate and how we were all dressed.  I am so glad I didn't do it last year in the days leading up to that moment, because by posting now for this Throwback Thursday, I am giving priority to what truly deserves it. Of course, it was such a beautiful party, organized with such care by Alma, supported by her parents, especially her mother, that I want to highlight it and give them all the credit for creating such a special experience.  But far from my blog being a social events magazine, or the social page of Panorama (my friend Lemaire will understand me), as it deserves to have been in such a publication, this post is a tribute to friendship that lasts over time. Friendship that hopes to continue celebrating together, to share many more moments, to be present in difficult times, to help those wonderful people I admire and appreciate. It is also a time to thank you for the people we met thanks to you and those special people we knew before and have in common. Like Enrique's best friends, Mayk, Iliana, and their girls, whom I promise to follow their lives and take care of while you are not here. To dream that in the future, when we parents are very old or no longer here, Alma and Tomás will love my Oscar, Viktor, Isaac, and Amelie very much, and that they will love them very much in return. We will wait for you here forever, your friends from the house in the mountains. Here we wait for Alma for her decorating advice and astrology predictions, and here we wait for Tomás with his soccer ball and basketball. Here we hope to one day wake up talking with Enrique and Lemaire while Oscar makes us laugh with his funny stories. This was supposed to be a 300-word #TBT post remembering Alma's 15th birthday, but it turned into a public letter to my friends. Didn't the quinceanera look beautiful? --- Español ## Carta pública a mis amigos al recordar la mejor celebración: Los 15 de Alma  Estuve organizando mis cajitas de recuerdos buscando algo que nunca encontré, pero afortunadamente encontré unas fotografías instantáneas de la fiesta de 15 años de una querida amiga de mi corazón. La hija mayor de mi amiga Lemaire cumplió 15 años en agosto del año pasado y organizaron una fiesta muy íntima con la familia y los amigos más cercanos para celebrar la ilusión de esta brillante niña por sus 15.  Busqué las fotos que tomamos con nuestras cámaras ese día y estuve recordando lo bonito que estuvo todo, realmente hermoso, sin más ni menos, sin excesos pero con cuidado de cada detalle único. De verdad amé haber estado en una celebración llena de tan buen gusto y un estilo que supo representar fielmente a la homenajeada, una chica que sabe lo que quiere y cómo lo quiere y que además sabe cómo expresarlo de la forma más asertiva que he visto.  Quería decir esto, totalmente, siento mucha felicidad de resaltarlo. Pero, realmente, ahora paso a contarles lo que más estuve pensando al recordar esta fiesta: Ver crecer a Alma, al igual que su hermano Tomás, la mayor parte de tiempo a través de una gran distancia, y aun así, profundamente cercanos, con un lazo que no tiene que ver con la sangre, pero si con los ideales de unos jóvenes que sonábamos común mundo diferente y con un compromiso y un amor por acompañarnos con el corazón y moralmente en la crianza de los hijos de ambas familias sabiendo que contamos los unos con los otros y saber que fue importante para ella, sus padres y su hermano que nosotros estuviéramos presentes en ese momento.  Lo que sentí y vuelvo a sentir en estos momentos es un profundo agradecimiento por haberme sentido parte de ellos, por haber cultivado una amistad de tantos largos años y que a pesar de no encontrarnos frecuentemente, tener la certeza de que cada vez va a ser igual que siempre.  En los días cercanos a la fiesta, tenía las fotos a la mano y planeaba hacer un post, sería un post de una celebración de familia y amigos, sería la experiencia de una fiesta, sería un cuento de lo que bailamos y lo que comimos y como estábamos vestidos todos. Cuanto me alegro de no haberlo hecho el año pasado en los días cercanos a aquel momento, porque publicando ahora para este Throwback Thursday le doy prioridad a lo que de verdad lo merece.  Claro está, fue una fiesta tan linda y con tanto esmero de Alma, apoyada por sus padres, especialmente su mamá, que quiero resaltarlo y darles toda la satisfacción por haber creado una experiencia tan especial.  Pero lejos de ser mi blog una revista de eventos sociales, o la página de sociales de Panorama (mi amiga Lemaire me entenderá) pues bien que lo merece haber estado en una publicación así, este post es un homenaje a la amistad que perdura en el tiempo.  La amistad que tiene esperanza de seguir celebrando juntas, de compartir muchos más momentos, de estar presente en las dificultades, de ayudar a esos seres maravillosos que admiro y aprecio.  También es momento para darles gracias por las personas que conocimos gracias a ustedes y de aquellas personas tan especiales que conocíamos antes y tenemos en común. Como los mejores amigos de Enrique, a quienes Mayk, Iliana y sus niñas, a quienes prometo seguir sus vidas y cuidarlos mientras ustedes no están aquí. ||| |-|-| Soñar con que en el futuro Alma y Tomás, cuando ya los padres estemos bien viejitos o ya no estemos, quieran mucho a mis Oscar, Viktor, Isaac y Amelie y que estos recíprocamente los quieran mucho a ellos.  Aquí los esperamos por siempre, sus amigos de la casa de la montaña. Aquí esperamos a Alma para sus consejos de decoración y sus predicciones de astrología y aquí esperamos a Tomás con su balón de Futbol y de basket. Aquí esperamos algún día amanecer conversando con Enrique y Lemaire mientras Oscar nos hace reír con sus cosas maracuchas. Este iba a ser un post de 300 palabras de recuerdo #TBT de los 15 años de Alma, pero se convirtió en una carta pública a mis amigos.  Verdad que la quincesñera estaba preciosa? ---
