Phalaborwa: Where Nature Tells Stories"

Phalaborwa, located in Limpopo Province, is best known today as a mining town and gateway to the Kruger National Park. Its history, however, stretches back hundreds of years and is closely tied to both indigenous iron smelting and modern mining.

This refers to the migration of Ba-Phalaborwa clans into the area centuries ago, who found the land rich in minerals and more productive than the regions they had left.

Archaeological evidence shows that as early as the 8th century, local communities were smelting copper and iron in the area. By the 13th century, the Ba-Phalaborwa were established as skilled metalworkers, producing copper and iron tools, ornaments, and trade goods. Copper was particularly important, with artifacts found as far away as Great Zimbabwe and Mapungubwe, indicating extensive trade networks.

The discovery of large phosphate and copper deposits in the 20th century marked the beginning of modern mining in the area. In 1951, Phalaborwa Mining Company was established to exploit the copper resources, and later Foskor was founded to mine phosphates

These industries transformed Phalaborwa into an industrial town, with mining remaining its economic backbone.
