Esa tarde, después de nuestra visita a San Juan de Letrán, nos dirigimos a conocer la Casa Generalicia de los Dehonianos, una parada muy especial para nuestras compañeras de aventura: Rosangel y Keilys, ya que ellas asisten en Cojedes, Venezuela a una parroquias administrada por esta congregación. Allí, además, se encontraba el padre José Gregorio, quien había sido su párroco y ahora se encontraba finalizando estudios en Roma.
Llegar no fue tan sencillo, de hecho nos perdimos y tuvimos que tomar varios autobuses, pero luego de encontrar el camino, y caminar un poco, el trayecto valió totalmente la pena. La casa estaba ubicada en una zona tranquila y rodeada de jardines hermosos, aunque algunas zonas se encontraban en reparaciones. Apenas llegamos, el padre José Gregorio nos recibió con una sonrisa, nos ofreció algo para tomar y un espacio para descansar del calor de la tarde.
That afternoon, after our visit to San Juan de Letrán, we went to visit the General House of the Dehonians, a very special stop for our adventure companions, Rosangel and Keilys, since they attend a parish in Cojedes, Venezuela, administered by this congregation. Father José Gregorio, who had been their parish priest and was now finishing his studies in Rome, was also there.
Getting there was not so easy; in fact, we got lost and had to take several buses, but after finding the way and walking a bit, the journey was totally worth it. The house was located in a quiet area surrounded by beautiful gardens, although some areas were under repair. As soon as we arrived, Father José Gregorio welcomed us with a smile, offered us something to drink, and a place to rest from the afternoon heat.
El padre tenía un compromiso en la barbería, así que nos dejó al cuidado de otro hermano de comunidad, un padre polaco que hablaba algo de español y que se convirtió en nuestro guía. Fue muy amable y cercano, mientras caminábamos por los pasillos, nos fue contando su experiencia como dehoniano, cómo había llegado a Roma para continuar sus estudios, y cómo era la vida en comunidad.
Our father had an appointment at the barber shop, so he left us in the care of another brother from the community, a Polish priest who spoke some Spanish and became our guide. He was very kind and friendly. As we walked through the corridors, he told us about his experience as a Dehonian, how he had come to Rome to continue his studies, and what life in the community was like.
Durante la explicación, nos detuvimos a leer unos afiches colocados en el pasillo, donde se narraba la historia y el propósito de la casa. Decían que la Casa Generalizia está formada por el gobierno general de la congregación (superior, consejos, secretario, ecónomo, postulador y colaboradores), quienes se encargan de coordinar las actividades de los Dehonianos en todo el mundo.
También mencionaban que allí funciona el colegio internacional, donde estudian sacerdotes dehonianos provenientes de Asia, América, Europa y África. Entre la formación que reciben se encuentran estudios en filosofía, teología, derecho canónico, entre otros.
Los dehonianos combinan la vida comunitaria combina el estudio, la oración y la fraternidad, pilares que sostienen su identidad religiosa y su equilibrio espiritual. Además, participan en actividades pastorales que fortalecen su preparación para servir a sus comunidades cuando regresen a sus países.
También leímos que la casa está ubicada en la zona de Aurelia, un lugar con raíces antiguas. Hasta 1870 formaba parte de la Campagna Romana, una región agrícola caracterizada por su tranquilidad y belleza natural. Con el tiempo, se urbanizó y se convirtió en un punto estratégico para instituciones religiosas.
During the explanation, we stopped to read some posters placed in the hallway, which told the history and purpose of the house. They said that the General House is made up of the general government of the congregation (superior, councils, secretary, treasurer, postulator, and collaborators), who are responsible for coordinating the activities of the Dehonians throughout the world.
They also mentioned that the international college operates there, where Dehonian priests from Asia, America, Europe, and Africa study. Among the training they receive are studies in philosophy, theology, canon law, among others.
The Dehonians combine community life with study, prayer, and fraternity, pillars that sustain their religious identity and spiritual balance. In addition, they participate in pastoral activities that strengthen their preparation to serve their communities when they return to their countries.
We also read that the house is located in the Aurelia area, a place with ancient roots. Until 1870, it was part of the Campagna Romana, an agricultural region characterized by its tranquility and natural beauty. Over time, it became urbanized and became a strategic location for religious institutions.
Uno de los momentos más especiales fue cuando visitamos la capilla de la casa. Desde el instante en que cruzamos la puerta, se sintió una paz profunda. Era un espacio luminoso, acogedor y lleno de significado, donde se conservan reliquias del Beato Juan María de la Cruz, uno de los primeros compañeros del Padre León Dehon.
Entre los detalles que más llamaban la atención estaban los instrumentos musicales dispuestos en el lugar: tambores africanos, guitarras y otros provenientes de distintos países, reflejo de la riqueza cultural y la diversidad que caracteriza a la comunidad.
Todo estaba dispuesto con sencillez, pero con una belleza que inspiraba a orar. Allí hicimos una breve pausa, en silencio, dejando que ese ambiente nos hablara del amor de Dios que se expresa en tantas formas distintas.
One of the most special moments was when we visited the house chapel. From the moment we walked through the door, we felt a deep sense of peace. It was a bright, welcoming space, full of meaning, where relics of Blessed John Mary of the Cross, one of Father Leon Dehon's first companions, are preserved.
Among the details that most caught our attention were the musical instruments displayed in the chapel: African drums, guitars, and other instruments from different countries, reflecting the cultural richness and diversity that characterizes the community.
Everything was arranged with simplicity, but with a beauty that inspired prayer. There we paused briefly in silence, allowing the atmosphere to speak to us of God's love, which is expressed in so many different ways.
Antes de despedirnos, tuvimos la grata sorpresa de encontrarnos con el Superior General de la congregación, quien también se encontraba allí en ese momento. Pudimos conversar un poco con él y, por supuesto, aprovechar para tomarnos algunas fotos juntos. Nos sentimos muy bien recibidos y acompañados durante toda la visita, fue un lugar perfecto para descansar después de la caminata de la mañana y recargar energías para continuar nuestro recorrido por la tarde.
Before saying goodbye, we had the pleasant surprise of meeting the Superior General of the congregation, who was also there at the time. We were able to chat with him for a while and, of course, take the opportunity to take some photos together. We felt very welcome and accompanied throughout the visit. It was the perfect place to rest after our morning walk and recharge our batteries to continue our tour in the afternoon.
