The best vegan food in Oslo, Norway! Resturant reviews + A simple & fancy tofu stir-fry recipe.

@ambrosiacafe · 2018-10-12 22:45 · vegan

The time during this year that I did not spend traveling or having cafe-pop ups with Ambrosia, I have been living at my cabin an hour away from the capital of Norway. It is beautiful for sure, surrounded by the fjord and mountains, a magical and quiet place.

Neither me or my partner in crime, love and adventures have a car at the moment, so we have to take the bus or walk for 6 km to the store. There is no restaurants, at least with vegan food in the closest populated area, so I get much time to try new creative ways of cooking at least!

But we do spend some days in the capital, Oslo, occasionally. And then it feels extra special to be able to go out to my favorite restaurants and get served fancy, vegan food without having to walk a mile or cook for and hour!

So I thought I'd share with you my go-to vegan restaurants in Oslo. If you or someone you know are located around Oslo, make sure to check these resturants out for some mouth-watering and tasteful experiences! IMG_20181011_193309.jpg

#1 Loving hut @ Bjerregards Gate | 100% vegan restaurant. |

I am not joking when I say that this is one of our favorite restaurants in the world. A small, not to fancy place, with the most fancy and amazing vegan food ever. Their menu ranges from Asian, to junk food, to fully raw dishes. They have awesome main dishes, desserts and smoothies, as well as teas and other sweets.

I have brought several non-vegan friends and family members here and everyone has been overwhelmed and surprised of the tastes and presentation vegan food can have.

Dishes you should try:

  • BBQ melody Is a wonderful and creative melody of dishes on a plate - Asian BBQ-marinated vegan meat that is SO tasty, noodles, spring rolls filled with awesomeness, a mixed salad with the best dressing among more.

  • Wonton soup A spicy Asian vegetable soup with wonton/dumplings. Perfect for cold days, or when you want something spicy and warming!

  • Summer rolls & Spring rolls Both are among the best I have had.

Or just try everything on their menu; Wok, spicy burger, not-dog! You will not be disappointed.

#2 Funky fresh foods | 100% vegan restaurant. |

Funky and fresh is exactly what this place is. They focus on fancy, vegan and gluten free food, cakes and drinks. It is located inside the design and architecture house in Oslo, with a river view and is a medium up class-place.

This place is a little bit expensive, so before we in the Ambrosia crew moved to different places, this was the restaurant we went out to to celebrate or when we wanted to be a little bit more fancy!

Dishes you should try:

  • Sharing tapas! A wonderful and creative tapas filled with so many awesome small dishes!

  • Burgers & Cakes They have a variety of raw cakes and burgers all worth a try!

#3 NordVegan. | 100% vegan restaurant. |

Nordvegan opened this year and is a really good restaurant. Their dishes is made in collaboration with a Michelin-starred chef, that might say enough.

I only got the chance to check out this place twice, but I just heard good things and read good reviews about NordVegan. It is quite expensive, around 200 NOK for a big portion.

Dishes you should try:

  • Lasagna! They have the best vegan lasagna I ever tasted, and I therefor ordered it both the times I was there.

#4 SudØst. | A few really good vegan options. |

SudØst is a very fancy and up class European / Asian restaurant.

They have a lot of no-no stuff on their menu, but their vegan options are AMAZING!

Dishes to try:

  • Pad Thai They have the best vegan pad Thai that I ever had.

  • Chocolate cake I cant think about this cake without craving it! Dark chocolate cake with raspberry purè and coconut Sorbet!

Some more places worth to mention:

It is finally starting to open a lot of vegan places in Oslo, and restaurants offering a vegan option is becoming normal at least most places. Here are a few more places worth to check out:

Bislett Kebab.

is the first kebab chain in Norway, and they are now starting to focus on plant based! They have vegan kebab meat in roll or pita, or a kebab pizza with vegan cheese! They even have 50% off all vegetarian food on tuesdays!

Apsorn Thai @ Torshov.

Is an non vegan restaurant in Oslo, but they do have a good understanding of what vegan is. They have 2 vegetarian dishes on their menu that can be veganised if you ask them (because of fish-sauce.) My friend just told me that they can make all the dishes on their menu vegan and with tofu in stead of fish or meat. Just remember to ask them to make it fully vegan without fish sauce!

I recommend to check out the app vegan Norway to find vegan food in Norway's biggest cities!

Recipe: Simple vegan stir-fry!

Ny.jpg Serves 2 people, double or triple the recipe for a huge stir-fry. :)

After showing you all this fancy restaurant food, I thought it should be in is place to show you how easy you can make it yourself!

Base:

  • Tofu, 1 package.
  • Rice.

Veggies:

  • 1/2 small Broccoli.
  • 1 Onion, red or white.
  • 1 Chili.
  • 1/2 garlic.
  • Ginger. Thin fingerlenght.

Topping:

  • 1 Handful cashew nuts.
  • 2 Tbs. sesame seeds. -Lime

-1 Add a frying pan to medium heat and set a casserole with water to boil.

- 2 Chop your tofu in cubes. I preffer big cubes, but cut them how you wish! Add them to a bowl and shake in 4 tbs. corn flour, some soy sauce, salt and pepper.

- 3 Toast your cashews and sesame seeds in the pan for a minute or two, and set them aside in a small bowl.

- 4 Fry the tofu on medium high heat for about 10 minutes or until golden. Meanwhile, chop your veggies:

The Chili, ginger and garlic should be finely chopped, while the Broccoli and Onion can be in big bouquets/half moons. If you use some other veggies like zucchini, this should be in quite big chunks to keep in crunchy. When it is time for chopping veggies, I like to get started with the rice.

- 5 Add the tofu to a plate and sprinkle over the nuts and seeds.

- 6 Rinse out your frying pan and set it back on the stove on high heat. Start off with frying your ginger, chili and garlic for a short minute before adding in the rest of your veggies.

Stir fry the veggies for about 5 minutes, until they are a bit golden but still fresh and crunchy!

Add some rice to your plate, then the veggies and top with the tofu and some soy-sauce + a little lime juice.
