La frase “slot machine” es el término más genérico y universalmente entendido en el mundo angloparlante para referirse a una máquina tragamonedas o tragaperras. Sin embargo, en la cultura angloparlante (específicamente la británica), aunque se entiende perfectamente, hay matices y otros términos que son mucho más comunes en el día a día. Pero en esta ocasión, me dedicaré a especificar la frase en el contexto literal: “Las Máquinas Físicas”.
Se refiere a la máquina de juego de azar. Los lugares donde las he encontrado y cómo se refieren a ellas son clave, y si viajas te interesará seguir leyendo, je, je, je.
Lo más típico son los Casinos: en un casino grande, como los que hay en Londres, Manchester o en línea. Aquí, el término “slot machine” o simplemente “slots” es muy común. Es el lenguaje internacional del juego. Vamos a jugar a las tragamonedas, o el casino tiene más de 200 máquinas tragamonedas diferentes, son expresiones ordinarias; así como en Venezuela dicen: “vamos a la farmacia” para referirse a buscar unas cervezas.

En Salones Recreativos (Amusement Arcades): son muy típicos de las ciudades costeras británicas (como Brighton, Blackpool). Son locales llenos de videojuegos y máquinas de azar. Aquí, también se usa principalmente “fruit machine” para las máquinas de premios en efectivo, y “slot machine” se puede usar para referirse a las máquinas más simples, como las que funcionan con monedas de 2 peniques (“2p machines”).
Y por último, y no menos importante, en término histórico o nostálgico: se usa el término antiguo “one-armed bandit” (bandido de un solo brazo). Se llama así por la palanca lateral que tenían las máquinas antiguas para hacer girar los rodillos. Hoy en día suena un poco anticuado, pero todo el mundo lo entiende y se usa con un toque nostálgico o para referirse a las máquinas de estilo vintage.
