Hand colored with colored pencils: African Conga

@andrewq · 2025-10-27 21:01 · Rising Star Game

A big hug to all my friends of Rising Star and hive in general. It's a great and enormous privilege for me to be among you in this new post, where I want to show you my handmade drawing. I'd like to say that today I drew the African Conga musical instrument. You can find it if you want to buy it under the ID number i117. It's not very expensive, so if you want to have it in your collection, you can easily get it, and I'm sure your in-game band will look amazing with it.

--- Well, the African Conga is a very interesting instrument due to its age. It's not known for sure what country it originated from, but what culture it belongs to is known, and the instrument's name already gives you a clue: it's African. Many years, possibly centuries and centuries, passed before it became the current version of what we know today as the African Conga. In its beginnings, it was likely just a hollowed-out trunk that later evolved with each generation and with the materials that were discovered. At some point in history, someone added pressed fabric or animal skins held together with a metal ring, creating a precursor to what we have today. Naturally, each generation added their own touches depending on what they wanted, and that's how the different types of African Conga and their various tunings emerged.

--- All African Conga drums are played with the palms of the hands and fingers. Mallets aren't used to play them because they weren't designed for that. I often hear them in Caribbean music; they're widely used in Brazil and Venezuela. It's certainly an instrument worth talking about. But I'm sure you'd like me to tell you something about the drawing I've been showing you. As you've seen in the series of images I've been leaving you, in the first ones you can see how I drew the conga with the base of the deck of cards and then how I colored everything with colored pencils. But you still need to see the finish and some of the materials used to make this drawing. ![9.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/andrewq/23wC1Z6C5U8FWZaa69dsGkZ6evEVSZFGXvvjZQjr76bNdeAzdAYXcquKT1iw1wk8TS9wp.jpg) It's a rather unusual instrument, steeped in history. That's why it was an honor to show it to you today. A big hug, and I'll be back in a few days with a new drawing.
