--- What's most striking when looking at the timpani, I think, is its size. It's a very large drum, and while it's not the largest, it's among the largest. And of course, at such a large size, the music resulting from playing it is equally large, although in practical terms, it translates into a very deep sound. It's very useful in classical music orchestras or for creating plays that require a military battle atmosphere. Despite its size, it doesn't play alone; it can be played alongside others, even up to four timpani at once. I imagine it must be very difficult to control them all. Some can be placed on a base and played with a pedal that, when pressed, has a rubber ball that hits the drum and produces the music, so the player has their hands free to play other things.
