This was 3 years ago. We went to the baptism of my husband’s brother’s baby. It was special for our family, and also for my mom because it was her first time joining an event here in Malaysia. She was shy but also excited. We went in one car. The place was far, about one hour drive. On the way, Mama looked outside and enjoyed the view. She asked me about some things she saw, and I explained to her simply. When we got to the church, my mom saw the statue of Mother Mary. She went there and asked me to take her picture. She was happy. Inside, many people were there already. The kids ran around greeting relatives. I said hello to everyone. Mama also smiled at them but did not talk much because she cannot speak English.
Inside the church, my mother sat beside me, quietly watching everything. We joined the mass first, then the baptism began. Even if she didn’t understand all the words, she still know what’s happening. When the priest pour water on the baby’s head, she smile and whisper to me, “It’s beautiful.” After the ceremony, we eat together at the reception. My in-laws, they talk to Mama using simple words and hand signs. She smiled, nodded, and sometimes laughed. If she didn’t understand, she looked at me to translate. On the way home, Mama said she was happy she came. She said the place was nice and the people were kind. I was happy too. It was not only about the baptism, but also about Mama’s first time to join a family event here in Malaysia. Even without many words, she felt welcome and loved.
