Some weekends make our family feel extra happy, and this one is a good example. It all started with our cravings. Everyone wanted something different, and usually, that means someone has to give up what they like. But this weekend was not like that at all. The kids asked first. They wanted KFC — their favorite treat. To them, nothing beats crispy chicken and fries. Just mentioning it already brought smiles to their faces. Then, someone else said they wanted donuts. Sweet, soft, and colorful, donuts always make the kids excited. As for me, I wanted something different — carrot cake. It’s a simple cake, but one of my favorites due to its soft texture and creamy topping. Usually, when everyone wants different food, families just pick one for all. But my husband had a different plan. He wanted all of us to be happy. When he gives surprises, he always does it with love. So off he went with a smile, and soon he came back home carrying bags full of food.”The smell of KFC that we can get from opening the box, and the kids were so excited and happy. Then came a box of donuts, so sweet and tempting. Tapos ayun na, he brought out my carrot cake—the one I had been waiting for. My heart felt so full. We all sat around the table, each with the treat we had wished for.

The kids couldn’t stop laughing while eating their chicken. Donut cream was on their cheeks, and they were giggling nonstop. I sat quietly with my carrot cake, smiling and feeling contented. My husband was looking at us with so much love and care, at kitang-kita ko rin yung joy sa mga mata niya. He doesn’t spoil us often, pero kapag ginawa niya, he gives his whole heart. To others, it may look like just food. But to me, it was love. It was care. It showed me that happiness is not always about expensive things. We didn’t need trips or fancy items to feel joy. That night, what made us happy was simple—being together and eating the food we each loved. Life as a family is not always easy. May mga araw na puno ng stress, ingay, at pagod. Pero moments like this bring balance. It reminds me that we don’t need a perfect life to feel blessing.

The family is enough with the small surprises.I know my kids won’t always remember the exact taste of the donuts or kung gaano ka-crispy yung chicken. But I believe they will remember the feeling. They will remember how Dad came home with all our favorites, how Mom’s face lit up with joy, at kung paano napuno ng ngiti ang buong bahay that night. Yung feelings na ganito, tumatagal kaysa kahit anong pagkain. For me, I could not ask for more. A simple meal became a celebration of love. In my heart, I said thank you for the life I have. I do not wish for big or fancy things anymore.” What I have now — isang simpleng masayang pamilya — is already enough. This is what weekends mean to me. Hindi lang siya days off from work. It’s a chance to slow down, eat together, laugh, and create memories na tatagal habang buhay. My husband’s small surprise gave us more than just full stomachs. It gave us joy na hindi kayang itago. At the end of the day, when the food was finished and tahimik na ang mga bata, I told myself: this is real happiness. This is family. This is love.
