Hace poco me pasó algo bastante curioso que me dejó pensando. Quise invitar a una primita a leer El Principito, uno de mis libros favoritos, y su respuesta fue:
Recently something quite curious happened to me that got me thinking. I wanted to invite a little cousin to read The Little Prince, one of my favorite books, and her response was:
“Lo más largo que yo leo son los mensajes de WhatsApp.”
“The longest thing I read is WhatsApp messages.”
Y aunque me dio risa, también me preocupó un poco. Por eso hoy quiero dejarles tres tips sencillos pero efectivos que pueden ayudar a que los más pequeños (y no tan pequeños) se interesen por el maravilloso mundo de la lectura:
And although it made me laugh, it also worried me a little. That's why today I want to leave you with three simple but effective tips that can help get the little ones (and not so little ones) interested in the wonderful world of reading:
✨ 1. Crear un ambiente lector en casa (o en la escuela)/ Creating a reading environment at home (or at school)
Los niños y adolescentes son naturalmente curiosos. A veces, cuando están aburridos de su rutina, puede ser el momento perfecto para que se acerquen a los libros. Pero para eso es clave que tengan un espacio cómodo, agradable y libre de presiones.
Children and teenagers are naturally curious. Sometimes, when they are bored with their routine, it can be the perfect time for them to approach books. But for that, it is key that they have a comfortable, pleasant and pressure-free space.
No hace falta una biblioteca gigante ni muebles costosos. Les cuento que en mi adolescencia, mi lugar favorito para leer era mi cuarto, sentada en mi silla plegable, con mi teléfono dañado al lado. A pesar de todo, ese rincón se volvió mi refugio lector. El ambiente hace la diferencia.
No need for a giant library or expensive furniture. I tell you that in my adolescence, my favorite place to read was my room, sitting in my folding chair, with my damaged phone next to me. In spite of everything, that corner became my reading haven. The environment makes all the difference.
📚 2. Dejar que lean lo que les gusta/Let them read what they like
Este punto puede generar debate, pero creo que es esencial. Permitir que los niños y adolescentes lean lo que realmente les atrae es una forma de motivarlos. Claro, siempre es recomendable hacerlo bajo supervisión, especialmente con los más pequeños.
This point may generate debate, but I believe it is essential. Allowing children and adolescents to read what really appeals to them is a way to motivate them. Of course, it is always advisable to do so under supervision, especially with younger children.
Confieso que yo no tuve mucha supervisión con mis lecturas, lo que me llevó a leer cosas un poco fuertes para mi edad a los 14 años... pero bueno, esa es otra historia 😂. Lo importante es encontrar libros que les gusten, que los nutran y que estén en sintonía con su etapa de desarrollo.
I confess that I didn't have much supervision with my readings, which led me to read things a bit strong for my age at 14.... but well, that's another story 😂. The important thing is to find books that they enjoy, that nurture them, and that are in tune with their stage of development.
📖 3. Dar el ejemplo/Setting an example
Nada inspira más que ver a alguien cercano disfrutando de la lectura. Si en casa hay un adulto que lee, es mucho más probable que los niños también quieran intentarlo. Por eso, debemos convertirnos en ese ejemplo.
Nothing inspires more than seeing someone close to you enjoying reading. If there is an adult at home who reads, it is much more likely that children will also want to try it. That's why we must become that example.
Yo, por ejemplo, quiero que mi prima me vea leyendo El Principito. Tal vez si ve que me entretengo, se anime a abrir el libro también. Quién quita, y termina enamorándose de la lectura tanto como yo.
>I, for example, want my cousin to see me reading The Little Prince. Maybe if she sees that I'm entertaining myself, she'll open the book too. Who knows, she might end up falling in love with reading as much as I do.
En resumen, estos son tres pequeños consejos para intentar incentivar el amor por los libros en niños, niñas y adolescentes. Y aunque suene redundante, nunca está de más recordarlo: leer es un acto de amor, imaginación y crecimiento.
In summary, these are three small tips to try to encourage the love of books in children and adolescents. And although it may sound redundant, it never hurts to remember: reading is an act of love, imagination and growth.
