En esta ocasión quiero recordar con ustedes algunas novelas venezolanas que, aunque en su momento me hicieron leer obligatoriamente en la escuela, hoy reconozco que dejaron una huella en mí, incluso si en ese entonces no les di el valor que merecían.
Hello dear Hive community, I hope you are doing well. As always, it is a pleasure to be able to come through this medium to talk to you about books. On this occasion I want to remember with you some Venezuelan novels that, although at the time they made me read compulsorily in school, today I recognize that they left a mark on me, even if at that time I did not give them the value they deserved.
Memorias de Mamá Blanca/Memories of Mamá Blanca– Teresa de la Parra
Comencemos con el trauma literario que me dejó tercer año, cortesía de la profesora de Castellano. No sé si fue el libro en sí o la forma en que lo vimos, pero fue toda una experiencia.
Let's start with the literary trauma that third year left me with, courtesy of the Spanish teacher. I don't know if it was the book itself or the way we saw it, but it was quite an experience.
Años más tarde comprendí que Memorias de Mamá Blanca no es simplemente un cuento infantil, sino una autobiografía ficticia escrita por una de las plumas más importantes de nuestra literatura: Teresa de la Parra. A través de los ojos de una niña, se nos narra la vida en una hacienda de caña de azúcar, evocando una Venezuela rural que ya no existe, con tintes de nostalgia y melancolía.
Years later I realized that Memorias de Mamá Blanca is not simply a children's story, but a fictional autobiography written by one of the most important writers of our literature: Teresa de la Parra. Through the eyes of a little girl, life in a sugar cane hacienda is narrated, evoking a rural Venezuela that no longer exists, with tinges of nostalgia and melancholy.
La voz adulta que recuerda su infancia dota al relato de una belleza serena, cargada de símbolos sobre la identidad, la familia, el tiempo y la construcción de lo femenino. Hoy, con otra mirada, entiendo que no era solo una historia simple, sino una reflexión profunda sobre la niñez como parte esencial de lo que llegamos a ser como adultos.
The adult voice recalling her childhood endows the story with a serene beauty, loaded with symbols about identity, family, time and the construction of the feminine. Today, with a different look, I understand that it was not just a simple story, but a profound reflection on childhood as an essential part of what we become as adults.
🖋️ Ifigenia – Teresa de la Parra
Y sí, volvemos a hablar de Teresa de la Parra, porque al parecer mi profesora tenía una fijación especial con ella (y la verdad, ahora la entiendo). En su momento no dimensioné la importancia que tuvo Ifigenia, pero con el tiempo aprendí que fue una de las primeras novelas feministas de Venezuela.
And yes, we are talking about Teresa de la Parra again, because apparently my teacher had a special fixation with her (and the truth is, now I understand her). At the time I didn't realize how important Ifigenia was, but with time I learned that it was one of the first feminist novels in Venezuela.
La protagonista, María Eugenia Alonso, es una joven que se rebela contra los moldes impuestos a la mujer por la sociedad de su época. A través de sus confesiones, vemos cómo lucha contra el destino que otros le imponen: el matrimonio como única meta, el silencio como virtud y la sumisión como norma.
The protagonist, María Eugenia Alonso, is a young woman who rebels against the molds imposed on women by the society of her time. Through her confessions, we see how she fights against the destiny imposed on her by others: marriage as the only goal, silence as a virtue and submission as the norm.
Ifigenia es una crítica directa, valiente y adelantada a su tiempo. Una denuncia del machismo estructural, del poder de la Iglesia y de la hipocresía de las clases altas caraqueñas. En el liceo veía a María Eugenia como una protagonista interesante; ahora la veo como una mujer adelantada a su tiempo, y a su autora, como una visionaria que incomodó con la pluma.
Ifigenia is a direct, courageous and ahead of its time critique. A denunciation of structural machismo, the power of the Church and the hypocrisy of the upper classes of Caracas. In high school I saw María Eugenia as an interesting protagonist; now I see her as a woman ahead of her time, and her author as a visionary who made her pen uncomfortable.
🐎 Doña Bárbara – Rómulo Gallegos
Y llegamos al clásico entre los clásicos. Recuerdo que Doña Bárbara fue la novela que salvó mi nota en cuarto año, ¡y no es broma! Confieso que primero vi la telenovela y no me entusiasmaba mucho leerla, pero cuando me adentré en sus páginas, me di cuenta de que Rómulo Gallegos había escrito una obra extraordinaria.
And we come to the classic among classics. I remember that Doña Bárbara was the novel that saved my grade in fourth grade, and I'm not kidding! I confess that I first saw the telenovela and was not very excited to read it, but when I got into its pages, I realized that Rómulo Gallegos had written an extraordinary work.
La historia se desarrolla en los llanos venezolanos y representa el enfrentamiento entre la barbarie y la civilización, personificados en Doña Bárbara —una mujer fuerte, compleja y marcada por la violencia— y Santos Luzardo, el abogado que regresa a modernizar la tierra que le vio nacer.
The story takes place in the Venezuelan plains and represents the confrontation between barbarism and civilization, personified in Doña Bárbara -a strong, complex woman marked by violence- and Santos Luzardo, the lawyer who returns to modernize the land where he was born.
La riqueza del lenguaje, las descripciones del paisaje, los conflictos internos de los personajes y el trasfondo político y social convierten a esta novela en una joya. Y aunque el romance tiene sus matices algo cuestionables, admito que me atrapó. Gallegos no solo nos dio una gran historia, sino un retrato emocional y simbólico de nuestra identidad nacional. Siento orgullo de que una novela así sea venezolana y esté inspirada en nuestra tierra.
The richness of the language, the descriptions of the landscape, the internal conflicts of the characters and the political and social background make this novel a gem. And although the romance has its somewhat questionable nuances, I admit that I was hooked. Gallegos not only gave us a great story, but an emotional and symbolic portrait of our national identity. I am proud that such a novel is Venezuelan and inspired by our land.
En fin, qué ironía que aquellos libros que una vez miré con fastidio escolar hoy me parezcan piezas fundamentales de nuestra cultura. A veces, la literatura necesita tiempo, madurez y un poco de distancia para revelarse de verdad, Gracias por leerme.
Anyway, how ironic that those books that I once looked at with scholarly annoyance now seem to me to be fundamental pieces of our culture. Sometimes, literature needs time, maturity and a bit of distance to truly reveal itself.
