My little garden 🌱 (ENG/ESP)

Happy day to everyone in this green community. This is my first post here, as it hadn't occurred to me to show my plants before. I am now at a point in my life where I really enjoy the process of caring for them, which is why I want to show you my little garden.

Feliz día tengan todos en esta comunidad verde, esta es mi primera publicación por aquí y es que antes no se me había ocurrido mostrar mis plantas. Ahora estoy en un momento de mi vida donde disfruto mucho el proceso de cuidarlas y por eso quiero presentarles mi pequeño jardín.

I should start with this group of little plants because they were among the first ones I began to care for. Once, when I was in college, one of my friends gave me a small cactus that I tried hard to care for, but it didn't survive. It was the typical case of “even cacti die on you,” but I guess it wasn't the right time for me; I wasn't ready to take care of a plant.

Debo comenzar por este grupo de plantitas porque son de las primeras que comencé a cuidar. Una vez mientras estaba en la universidad una de mis amigas me regalo un pequeño cactus que me esforcé en cuidar, ese cactus no sobrevivió. Era el típico caso de "hasta los cactus se te mueren" pero supongo que no era mi momento, no estaba preparada para hacerme cargo del cuidado de una planta.

I had been left with a thorn in my side ever since, and that was what started my cactus collection. I don't even know where many of them came from; some were given to me as gifts, and others were brought by my mother, who knows where she got them. These, for example, are not mine; I am looking after them for a friend.

Una espinita me había quedado desde entonces y fue lo que comenzó la colección de cactus. Muchos no se ni de donde salieron, otros me los han regalado y otros los ha sacado mi madre quien sabe de dónde. Estos por ejemplo no son míos, se los estoy cuidando a una amiga.

What I like most about these days is seeing all the little cactus babies. I haven't removed them yet because they're still very small, but I really enjoy going to see how much they've grown.

Lo que me gusta más de estos días es ver todos los hijitos de los cactus, todavía no se los quito porque están muy chiquitos, pero disfruto mucho ir a ver que tanto han crecido.

Now, if you ask me about their names, the truth is that I have no idea. In all this time, I haven't looked up what they're called or what species they belong to. I think that's something I should do as soon as possible.

Ahora si de nombres me preguntan la verdad es que no tengo ni idea, en todo este tiempo no he buscado como se llaman ni a que especie pertenecen, creo que es algo que debería hacer lo antes posible.

This little ball you see here is one of the oldest ones. A cousin gave it to me when she found out I was planting my garden. It's a Buche, or at least that's what we call it here in the state where I live (Lara, Venezuela). This little plant bears magenta-colored fruit that really stands out among all the greenery. My mother loves to eat them.

Esta bolita que ven acá es de las más viejas, me la regalo una prima cuando supo que estaba armando mi jardín. Se trata de un Buche o por lo menos con ese nombre lo conocemos aquí en el estado donde vivo (Lara, Venezuela). Esta plantita da un fruto que es de color magenta que cada vez que sale se nota bastante entre tanto verde. A mi madre le encanta comérselos.

I've had this one as a “look but don't touch” since I had a child like this. It took me a lot of effort to raise him, but I have to admit that he's now at his best.

Este de aquí lo tengo como "mírame y no me toques" desde que me dieron un hijo de estos me costó muchísimo para que creciera, pero he de admitir que ahora está en su mejor momento.

I must admit that there are some in this family that are not my favorites, because no matter how careful I am not to touch them, I always end up getting pricked by one of their tiny thorns, which are so difficult to remove.

De esta familia debo admitir que tengo unos que no son mis favoritos y es que por mucho que sea cuidadosa de no tocarlos siempre termino pinchada con alguna de sus micro espinas que son tan difícil de sacar.

This group of plants are newer additions to the garden, and I remember first hearing about them at work. What I found most interesting was how they reproduce: with just one leaf, you can grow a whole succulent plant. “It looks easy,” I thought.

Este grupo de plantas son más nuevas en el jardín y recuerdo que comencé a escuchar de ellas una vez en el trabajo. Lo que me parecía más curioso era la forma de reproducirlas que solo con tener una hojita podías sacar toda una suculenta. "Se ve fácil" eso pensaba.

I have to admit that the survival rate of succulents has been higher than that of cacti, but that doesn't change the fact that some have died. I don't know if it's too much water or not enough; I don't really know what the formula is.

He de admitir que la tasa de supervivencia de las suculentas ha sido mayor que los cactus, pero eso no quita que si se han muerto algunas. No sé si es el exceso de agua o la falta de ella, no sé cuál es la fórmula realmente.

Some people recommend watering them every three days, although I recently saw a woman on Instagram with lots of large, beautiful succulents, and she said she watered them every day. Others say you should flood them once a week and then not water them again. Anyway, I still don't know what really works.

Hay quienes recomiendan regarlas cada tres días, aunque la otra vez vi en Instagram a una señora con muchas suculentas super grandes y hermosas y ella comentaba que el riego era diario. Otros dicen que se deben inundar un día a la semana y ya luego no se riega, en fin, aun no sé qué funciona realmente.

These ones here are ones I've watched grow since they were tiny. When they were big enough, I transplanted them into this pot, and there they doubled in size. I really enjoy putting together these pots with a variety of plants.

Estas de aquí son de las que he visto crecer desde chiquitas, cuando estuvieron lo suficientemente grandes las trasplanté a esta taza y allí duplicaron su tamaño. Me gusta bastante armar estas macetas con variedad.

Certainly, growing succulents is not that complicated, and they are quite forgiving plants for inexperienced caregivers like me, since you don't have to check on them every day—they can be very independent. I still like to check on them every day, just in case.

Ciertamente la tarea de cultivar suculentas no es tan complicada, además son plantitas bastante bondadosas con cuidadores inexpertos como yo, ya que no tienes que estar día con día al pendiente de ellas, pueden ser muy independientes. A mí me gusta igual verlas todos los días, por si acaso.

I recently went with my family to a craft fair, and among many other things, there was a stand selling plants. There were some beautiful roses of all colors, but I went straight to the succulent section. I'm not going to lie, I sometimes struggle to keep a cactus alive, so I can't even imagine how complicated it must be to care for a rose. By the way, the one in the photo above is one of the ones I bought.

Recientemente fui con mi familia a una feria de artesanías y entre tantas cosas tenían un stand de venta de plantas. Había unas bellezas de rosas de todos los colores, pero por mi parte, fui al área de las suculentas. No me voy a engañar, me cuesta a veces mantener vivo un cactus no quiero ni imaginar la complicada labor de mantener una rosa. Por cierto, esta que está en la foto de arriba es una de las que compre.

I ended up buying two succulents for $5. Many leaves fell off during the trip home, so I planted them all in a pot to see if they would grow. I'm happy to report that many of them are already taking root.

Termine comprando dos suculentas por 5 USD. A esta se le cayeron muchas hojitas en el traslado a mi casa así que termine sembrándolas todas en una maceta a ver si nacen. Les cuento que ya muchas están sacando raíz.

The other beauty I bought is this dragon flower or fire flower; I don't remember exactly what the man called it. It's a beauty I'd never seen before. I planted it in a pot that I also bought that same day, but I'm not sure if the plant is doing well or if it's going to die in the near future. I say this because I see that its leaves are drying out very quickly, so I try to water it a lot, but I'm still keeping an eye on it.

La otra belleza que compre es esta Flor del dragón o Flor de fuego, no recuerdo exactamente el nombre que me dijo el señor. Es una hermosura que ni de cerca había llegado a ver antes. La sembré en una maceta que compre ese mismo día también pero realmente no se si está bien la plantita o se va a morir en un futuro cercano, esto lo digo porque veo que sus hojas se están secando muy rápido entonces procuro echarle bastante agua, pero aun sigo en observación.

Oh! It also had these little flowers and some offshoots next to it that I'm trying to get to take root. With this type of plant, the leaf method didn't work for me, because I planted some individual leaves that had fallen off and they rotted. I guess the plant itself produces its own offshoots. Anyway, if you have any suggestions about this little plant, I'd love to hear them.

¡Ah! también traía estas florecitas y unos hijos a su lado que estoy intentado que saquen raíz. Con este tipo de planta si no funciono lo de la hoja, porque sembré unas hojitas individuales que se le habían caído y se pudrieron, supongo que la misma planta es la que saca sus hijos. De todas formas, si tienes alguna sugerencia con respecto a esta plantita, te leo.

If I had previously thought that keeping a cactus or succulent alive was a very complicated task, I wasn't prepared for what was to come. These jade plants are another level of gardening. My first jade plant is the one you see below. Today it is huge and has lots of new leaves, but when I got it, it was just a baby.

Si antes me había parecido una tarea muy complicada mantener con vida un cactus o una suculenta no estaba preparada para lo que venía. Estos jades son otro nivel de jardinería. Mi primer jade es este que ves aquí abajo, hoy esta super grandísimo y con muchas hojas nuevas, pero cuando me lo dieron era apenas un bebe.

Recently, I was curious to see how the plant's roots were doing, and they were actually quite large and spread throughout the pot. Now I want to ask, if I want it to grow like a small tree, how should I treat the roots?

Hace poco me entro la curiosidad de ver que tal estaba la raíz de la planta y realmente estaba bastante grande y regada por toda la maceta. Ahora quiero preguntar ¿Si quiero que crezca como un arbolito como debería tratar la raíz?

At my grandmother's house, there is a large jade plant that is planted directly in the ground. During one of my visits, I picked up several branches that had fallen on the ground. I planted each branch directly in pots, and in the process, many ended up dying. Suddenly, the leaves would rot and turn black as if they were burned. Only those three that you see there managed to thrive and take root.

En casa de mi abuela hay un jade grande que está sembrado directamente en la tierra, en una de mis visitas recogí varias de las ramas que estaban caídas en el suelo. Cada rama la sembré directamente en las macetas y en el proceso muchas terminaron muriendo, de pronto las hojas se pudrían y quedaban negras como si estuvieran quemadas. Solo esas tres que ven allí lograron prosperar y si echaron raíz.

Finally, this version of jade with much smaller leaves. This is my third attempt at planting one of the offspring of this plant, but so far I haven't been able to keep it alive. The process is too slow, so I never know if it's really alive even though the branches look green. Any suggestions?

Por último esta version de jade con la hoja mucho más pequeña. Este es mi tercer intento sembrando uno de los hijos de esta planta, pero que hasta el momento no he logrado hacer que permanezca viva. Su proceso es demasiado lento por lo que nunca se si está realmente viva a pesar de que las ramas se vean verdes, ¿Alguna sugerencia con ella?

And finally, I'll show you the rest of the plants that are part of my little garden. In their case, caring for them is much simpler.

Y bueno por último te muestro el resto de las plantas que forman parte de mi pequeño jardín. En el caso de ellas su cuidado es mucho más simple.

Well, this is my entire garden. I may have missed a few plants, but I will introduce them to you later. My intention in showing you the garden is also to hear advice, tips, and suggestions for improving the care of my plants every day.

Y bueno esto es todo mi jardín, quizás por allí se me escaparon algunas plantitas, pero más adelante se las iré presentando. Mi intención de mostrarles el jardín es también escuchar consejos, tips, sugerencias para mejorar cada día el cuidado de mis plantas.
