¡Saludos a todos! En esta oportunidad aprovecho para unirme a esta excelente iniciativa de la comunidad de Hivesicians donde cada semana discutiremos acerca de un tema concerniente a la música. Esta primera semana abordaremos lo siguiente: ¿La Tecnología ha cambiado la música para bien o para mal?
Greetings to all! In this opportunity I take the opportunity to join this excellent initiative of the Hivesicians community where every week we will discuss about a topic concerning music. This first week we will address the following: Has technology changed music for better or worse?
Cuando hablamos de tecnología es muy común que pensemos en robots, maquinaria pesada, un laboratorio y fórmulas matemáticas, pero el concepto de tecnología va mucho más allá abarcando todos aquellos instrumentos, métodos y todas las técnicas que podemos utilizar para resolver aquellos problemas que se presentan en la vida. 🔨
When we speak of technology it is very common that we think of robots, heavy machinery, a laboratory and mathematical formulas, but the concept of technology goes much further, encompassing all those instruments, methods and all the techniques that we can use to solve those problems that arise in life. 🔨

Partiendo de lo anterior, podríamos reconocer como tecnología (Primitiva quizá, pero tecnología al fin) maquinas simples como la rueda, la palanca o la polea, aun podríamos considerar tecnología el conocimiento de cómo encender el fuego de una fogata, y es justamente ahí donde se da la primera interacción entre la tecnología (primitiva, lo sé) y la música, allí cuando descalzos, en medio de las noches oscuras y frías, los primeros hombres se acercaron a las fogatas con sus instrumentos musicales de hueso, piedra y madera para expresarse.
Starting from the above we could recognize as technology (Primitive perhaps, but technology at last) simple machines like the wheel, the lever or the pulley, we could even consider technology the knowledge of how to light the fire of a bonfire, and it is precisely there where the first interaction between technology (primitive, I know) and music takes place, there when barefoot, in the middle of the dark and cold nights the first men approached the bonfires with their instruments of bone, stone and wood to express themselves.
Como podemos ver en el ejemplo anterior, la música está relacionada íntimamente con la tecnología y es tan cercana esta relación que resulta difícil separar la evolución de ambas a través del tiempo.
Por lo cual, en este espacio de discusión me gustaría exponer 5 aspectos en los que la tecnología ha cambiado a la música. 🎤🎧
As we can see in the previous example, music is intimately related to technology and this relationship is so close that it is difficult to separate the evolution of both through time.
Therefore, in this space of discussion I would like to present 5 aspects in which technology has changed music. 🎤🎧
💽 SOPORTE Y REPRODUCCIÓN - SUPPORT AND REPRODUCTION 💽
La música pasó de ser una manifestación exclusiva para las cortes nobles a convertirse en un lugar de encuentro para aquellas familias que tenían los recursos suficientes para comprarse un fonógrafo creado por Thomas Edison.
Y así comienza una era, a partir del momento en el que, a través de la tecnología aplicada, el sonido de la voz podía ser grabado y posteriormente reproducido. Luego de este hecho comenzaron los cambios.
The music went from being an exclusive manifestation for the noble courts to becoming a meeting place for those families who had enough resources to buy a phonograph created by Thomas Edison.
And so an era began, from the moment when, through applied technology, the sound of the voice could be recorded and later reproduced. After this fact the changes began.

El fonógrafo era un aparato que podía reproducir la música que se grababa en un cilindro del cual no se podían hacer copias y que fue fácilmente desplazado por el gramófono que esencialmente se encargaba de lo mismo con la diferencia de que este contaba con un disco plano del cual si se podía obtener un master y utilizar dicho master como un molde para hacer copias en masa (lo que ocurrió luego es historia). Estos discos fueron cambiando y mejorando hasta tener distintas duraciones y ser de materiales más resistentes.
The phonograph was a device that could reproduce the music that was recorded in a cylinder of which no copies could be made and that was easily displaced by the Gramophone that essentially took care of the same thing with the difference that this one had a flat disc of which if it was possible to obtain a master and to use it as a mold to make mass copies (what happened then is history). These discs were changing and improving until they had different durations and were made of more resistant materials.
Luego vino el turno de los Cassettes con la cinta magnética que trajo consigo un hito con el "Walkman" que permitía transformar la experiencia de escuchar música de una actividad grupal (alrededor de un fonógrafo o una radio) a ser una actividad mucho más íntima y personal, ahora podías escuchar tu canción favorita en cualquier lugar. 💿
Then came the turn of the Cassettes with the magnetic tape and that brought with it a milestone with the Walkman that transformed the experience of listening to music from a group activity (around a phonograph or a radio) to a much more intimate and personal activity, now you could listen to your favorite song anywhere. 💿

Luego llegó la era digital con sus Discos Compactos, sus Discmans, pero sobre todo con sus soportes digitales como el WAV y el mp3 para finalizar con lo que sería el mayor parte aguas hasta ahora: La llegada del Internet.

📚 COMPOSICIÓN Y PRODUCCIÓN - COMPOSITION AND PRODUCTION 💻
Cuando consideramos el impacto de la tecnología en los procesos creativos de composición y producción de la música, encontramos desde la implementación de instrumentos virtuales que permiten, a través de lenguajes como el MIDI, dar órdenes para reproducir por medio de una computadora el sonido de cualquier instrumento.
When we consider the impact of technology in the creative processes of composition and production of music we find from the implementation of virtual instruments that allow through languages like MIDI to give orders that allow to reproduce through a computer the sound of any instrument.
Podríamos mencionar también la creación de sonidos desde cero. Piensa por un momento en la posibilidad de imaginar cualquier melodia y luego tomar una onda pura de sonido y moldearla para transformarla y lograr crear el sonido que hasta hace tan solo unos momentos se encontraba en tus pensamientos, de eso también es capaz la tecnología. 💡
We could also mention the creation of sounds from scratch. Imagine the possibility of imagining any sound and then taking a pure wave of sound and shaping it, twisting it to transform it and managing to create the sound that until just a few moments ago was in your thoughts, that is also what technology is capable of. 💡

También conseguimos experiencias de composición y producción colaborativa a distancia donde uno o más compositores o productores se reúnen a través de internet para crear piezas musicales.
Sin mencionar que los avances en ingeniería de sonido han logrado que cada día la calidad del audio sea mejor y que día a día se generen nuevas formas de explotar la creatividad con recursos que nos dan las herramientas para definir el espacio, los colores y las frecuencias del sonido que se quiere obtener.

We also get experiences of collaborative composition and production at a distance where one or more composers or producers meet through the Internet to create musical pieces.
Not to mention that the advances in sound engineering have made every day the quality of the audio is better and every day new ways to exploit creativity are generated with resources that give us the tools to define the space, the colors and the frequencies of the sound that we want to obtain.

👨🎤 EJECUCIÓN Y PERFORMANCE - EXECUTION AND PERFORMANCE 👨🎤
Imagina por un momento el rock de los años setentas sin amplificadores, el Hip Hop de esa misma década sin mesas de mezcla, toda la música de los años ochenta sin sintetizadores. Muchos de los sonidos de los géneros musicales que conocemos (Hoy en día la mayoría) le deben su sonido a la tecnología que se había desarrollado hasta ese momento.
Imagine for a moment the rock of the seventies without amplifiers, the Hip Hop of that same decade without mixing tables, all the music of the eighties without synthesizers. Many of the sounds of the musical genres we know (most of them today) owe their sound to the technology that had been developed until that day.

La ejecución y las presentaciones se han visto afectados por los cambios en las interfaces y en la forma en la que se puede llegar a ejecutar un instrumento. Hoy en día existen experiencias donde una persona rodeada de cámaras se mueve en el espacio, y con cada movimiento activa un comando en un programa que ejecuta un sonido, imagínate esto: Ella se encuentra sobre el escenario, comienza a bailar, sube su brazo y suenen campanas, mueve su pierna y se escucha una guitarra, da un paso atrás y puedes oír un timbal, todo en vivo, expandiendo de esta manera lo que se puede considerar una ejecución musical.
Execution and presentations have been affected by changes in the interfaces and the way an instrument can be executed. Today there are experiences where a person surrounded by cameras moves in space, and with each movement activates a command in a program that executes a sound, imagine this: She is on stage, begins to dance, raises her arm and bells ring, moves her leg and you hear a guitar, takes a step back and you can hear a timpani, all live, thus expanding what can be considered a musical performance.
📺 DIFUSIÓN Y DISTRIBUCIÓN - DISSEMINATION AND DISTRIBUTION 📻
Así como los medios de comunicación cambiaron a través de la historia, la música lo hizo con ellos pasando de ser escuchada nada más en la radio a estar presente en la tv (y todo esto sin mencionar toda la revolución de Mtv y YouTube en cuanto a la difusión de videos musicales), de ser distribuida solo en las disco tiendas, a ser distribuida en forma de disco compacto junto a revistas y periódicos y por supuesto, al mayor de los cambios en cuanto a la difusión y distribución de la música: El internet.
Just as the media changed throughout history, music changed with them from being heard only on the radio to being present on TV (not to mention the entire Mtv and YouTube revolution in terms of the dissemination of music videos), from being distributed only in record stores, to being distributed in the form of a compact disc along with magazines and newspapers, and all this without mentioning the biggest change in the dissemination and distribution of music: the Internet.

Junto con la llegada del nuevo milenio nace una red social llamada Napster y mientras los ejecutivos de la industria musical disfrutaban de lo que había sido uno de los momentos más prolíferos de la venta de discos, en algún lugar unos jóvenes desarrollaban una manera de compartir música que generaría un antes y un después de lo que todos entendíamos por industria musical. 🎼
With with the arrival of the new millennium a social network called Napster was born and while the executives of the music industry were enjoying what had been one of the most prolific moments of record sales somewhere, some young people were developing a way of sharing music that would generate a before and after of what we all understood by music industry. 🎼

Con el nacimiento de Napster la música ahora era compartida de forma ilegal en la web así que se tuvo que crear una nueva industria y iTunes vino a ser el pionero en este aspecto con su sistema de “pago por descarga” simple, fácil, rápido y legal.
Hoy en día el Streaming es el rey, ni siquiera es necesario tener los archivos de mp3 solo hace falta una conexión a internet estable y listo.
With the birth of Napster music was now shared illegally on the web so a new industry had to be created and iTunes came to pioneer this aspect with its simple, easy, fast and legal "pay per download" system.
Today Streaming is king, you don't even need to have mp3 files, you just need a stable internet connection and you're done.
Podría pensarse que al llegar aquí nos encontramos en la frontera de lo posible, pero lo cierto es que la música como experiencia se sigue transformando, conciertos en 3D, conciertos en plataformas de videojuegos (como Fornite), transmisiones en vivo, clases virtuales de música, integración de la música a las redes sociales, inteligencia artificial aplicada a la producción.

En mi opinión si, la tecnología ha cambiado la música: la forma en la que la disfrutamos, la componemos, la producimos, la ejecutamos y la compartimos con otros, ampliando cada día más nuestra capacidad de creación y asombro.

You might think that when we get here we are at the frontier of the possible, but the truth is that music as an experience keeps transforming, 3D concerts, concerts in video game platforms (like Fornite), live transmissions, virtual music classes, integration of music to social networks, artificial intelligence applied to production.

In my opinion, yes, technology has changed music: the way we enjoy it, compose it, produce it, perform it and share it with others, expanding our capacity for creation and wonder every day.
