Ever since I've listened to the Town Hall about the possibility of a new card reward system coming to ranked play, I've made some more effort to somewhat upgrade my modern collection up a bit in order to prepare for what's to come. I've thought to myself, if the tradeable or sellable reward cards given to Frontier mode made a huge impact to the players in terms of demand and value, I'm certain it would be twice as exciting when we have stronger, more legitimate cards that can be acquired that are not maxed at half level.
The first I wanted to do was level up an archon to max level. I've already mentioned in my previous posts that I was really trying to focuse on a Weaken centered strategy where most of my units would have Weaken, and trying to get a large advantage over the enemies in terms of health.
Of course the archon perfect for this tactic would be Reklah with the 2 health point debuff to two enemy monsters. I was hesitant at first to utilize this archon since it's from Rebellion and it would rotate out of modern sooner than Conclave Arcana. But I figured it would still take about a year of play before the new set comes out and at the price point of lower than 50 cents, that's value for sure. I came short of 28 copies in order to max it out to level 8 but I'll get there slowly.
Another big acquisition for me was Executioner Kraan. I didn't really have a decent tank card for the Death element before. I often only relied on Great Bear Druid or Ulundin Overseer which is not really efficient for me. When I saw that there was one on sale for $14 max copy, I grabbed the opportunity. And now I have a very reliable tank that doesn't only emit Weaken, but also protects from magic attacks. I also especially like how the artwork resembles the color theme of Iron Man.
Next is Thraghun that I had at level four, which is the minimum needed to unlock Weaken. Aside from that, Thraghun is also a great support to Executioner Kraan. The Return Fire is also sometimes helpful in accidentally killing off Ranged enemies. But I sometimes wish the ranged attack of Thraghun was magic just like Bear Druid because enemies are often left with just one health point and magic attack would have been the right attack instead of being intercepted by armor.
Here is an example of a match that I utilized the three cards I've mentioned above. You can check the link here.
Now, since I don't usually use Sniper and Sneak Attack units, my usual targets for Reklah's -2 health are the first two spots of the opposing side. That combined with two units with Weaken, I've essentially dealt four damage right at the start of the match.
As you can see, almost all of my opponent's units are either one or two health, which are vulnerable enough to be one-shotted by all of my units. And even Arachne Weaver's Corrupted Healing wouldn't be of any help them as well. This match eneded in three short rounds.
In this other match, I managed to bring in another unit with Weaken, Sorrow Harvester from the Frontier set. This meant two enemy units got five health debuff while the rest got three health point reduction. You can check out the full match here.
As for an addition combo piece, I'm eyeing Lucky Longshot. It has a magic attack which is exactly what I'm looking for. As for her Weapons Training, I haven't really seen any ideal no attack unit to pair up with her just yet. We'd probably see good candidates in the upcoming reward set or possibly even in the mini set.
I'm pretty hyped for what's coming in the near future in Splinterlands, especially the reward cards since I can acquire them for free.
