Scientists in many countries have been continuously trying to find a solution to the plastic problem we face. We have been producing an enormous amount of plastic every year, and the problem with this plastic is that it is not biodegradable. When we try to dispose of some plastics, they break down to microplastics and harm our ecosystem. They either affect the oceans or enter the human body and affect the human body. Recently, there have been so many cases affected because of plastics. Without our knowledge, we have been consuming a lot of plastics every day in the form of Microplastics.
A recent study has found that plastics can be used as a fuel. Even though most of the plastics are created from petroleum products, because of the bonding, it becomes hard to break the bonding, and trying to use that as a regular fuel becomes challenging. This is why they have recently found out that when plastics are burnt using coal or charcoal, they are very good and become a good fuel source. This becomes great news because it can reduce the waste to a greater extent, converting it to fuel.
One part of the world is already moving away from plastics. We know for a fact that it is going to take several hundred years for the plastics that we have created already to break down and become biodegradable. The awareness is being created to reduce plastic usage and instead use other biodegradable alternatives. Products from Bamboo and sugarcane waste are becoming more sustainable and cost-effective compared to the use-and-throw products made using plastics. One-time-use plastics are the most dangerous ones because they cannot be reused, and at the same time, they don't get out of our ecosystem unless we do something about it.
To solve this problem, the scientists are working very hard to find a way to make plastics biodegradable. Even if we find a way to dispose of plastic or convert plastics safely, some problems will persist, where people are getting cancer because of too much plastic exposure. Countries like Singapore are managing their waste very well. They mostly burn their waste and convert it to energy. They also treat the smoke or poisonous gas produced in the process to make sure the air we breathe is also not contaminated.
A recent study has even found that it is not just humans who are affected by plastics, but they have found microplastics in plants, too, which makes it dangerous. The biggest transformation here is that they have found out that plastics can be combined with coal in the process called Steam gasification, which can produce a highly efficient hydrogen-rich syngas that can be used for energy. Coal is usually a catalyst in many things, and even here, the usage of coal as a catalyst provides a cost-effective and sustainable energy creation solution along with waste management.
