The history of Badrinath temple is very ancient and it is described in many religious texts like Skanda Purana, Mahabharata and Shrimad Bhagwat. It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya rebuilt this temple in the eighth century and removed the idol of Lord Vishnu from Narad Kund and reinstalled it in the temple.

According to another legend related to this place, when Lord Vishnu was doing penance at this place, it was very cold. His wife Goddess Lakshmi saved him from the cold by taking the form of a Badri (plum) tree. That is why this place was named Badrinath.

The architecture of the Badrinath temple is worth seeing. The main gate of the temple is called 'Singh Dwar'. Inside the temple, a one-foot-high, black Shaligram stone idol of Lord Vishnu is installed, who is seated in a Padmasana posture. This idol is considered by Hindus as one of the eight Swayam Prakriti Kshetras, i.e. idols that have manifested themselves.

Apart from Lord Badrinath, the temple also houses idols of Kubera, Narada, Uddhava and Nara-Narayan. There is also a hot water pond near the temple, called Tapt Kund. It is believed that bathing in this pond before visiting the temple washes away all sins.

It is considered to be the first village of India which is located near the border of China. The Saraswati river flows through here and the Vyas cave is also located here, where Maharishi Veda Vyas is believed to have composed the Mahabharata.

The best time to visit Badrinath is between May to October, as the temple doors remain closed due to heavy snowfall in winters.
