Saludos, amigos lectores, con este artículo voy a continuar mi recorrido por ciudades y lugares de España, país donde resido en la actualidad. Con anterioridad he publicado varios artículos sobre ciudades españolas que he visitado.Dediqué varios artículos de mi blog a Barcelona, Nerja, Frigiliana, Granada, Málaga. Acompáñenme hoy a visitar SALOBREÑA, una pequeña ciudad de la costa andaluza, que se encuentra a 65 kilómetros de Granada, entre las ciudades de Motril y Almuñécar.
CONOCIENDO ESPAÑA: Castillo de Salobreña
Quizá como a mí, te gustan las historias medievales, esas historias de héroes y villanos, de poder y tragedias, de amores imposibles, que ocurren tras los muros de un castillo. Aunque en realidad, en la mayoría de los casos, estos castillos fueron fortines, se construyeron como defensa militar ante posibles invasiones de bárbaros o piratas. Varias vías de comunicación, que te permiten llegar hasta allí, pasan por la ciudad: la Autovía del Mediterráneo A-7 Algeciras- Barcelona, la Carretera de Sierra Nevada N-323 Bailén-Motril y la Carretera del Mediterráneo N-340 Cadiz-Barcelona.
El camino al castillo
Como la mayoría de las ciudades de la costa tropical de España, Salobreña tiene un clima agradable en cualquier época del año, que varía entre los 24 grados centígrados en verano y los 12 grados en el invierno. Aunque la ciudad tiene cinco playas: El Cambrón, El Caletón, La Guardia, Salomar o de la Charca y Punta del Río, sin duda, su atracción turística más importante es el castillo y las bonitas calles que te llevan a él. Pero para hacer este paseo tiene que gustarte caminar. Vas a encontrarte calles de piedra con ventanas adornadas con flores, poemas y textos que te hablan de la ciudad. Es un recorrido que vale la pena, pero tiene que gustarte caminar. Te comparto algunas fotos que tomé.

El castillo
La historia de la ciudad se remonta a la época de los fenicios en la Antigüedad, que al parecer le dieron su nombre inicial “Segalvina”, Sel (‘corriente de agua’) y -amsina o -ansina, de la raíz indoeuropea *m°bhi (‘alrededor de’), usado en antiguo irlandés con el significado de ‘cercado’. Así la registraron los romanos que la poblaron después. Los árabes, que la conquistaron algunos siglos después la llamaron “Shalubānya”, pronunciado también Shalubīnya (del que procede el nombre actual).
El castillo de Salobreña, declarado Patrimonio Histórico de España; el cual te invito a visitar si vives o pasas por la provincia de Granada, fue construido en el siglo X, como una fortificación de defensa. Durante el periodo nazarí fue una cárcel, por donde pasaron varios monarcas mozárabes: Yusuf III, Muhammad VIII el Pequeño, Muhammad IX el Zurdo, Abu Nasr Sad y Muley Hacén.
Pero luego de la reconquista, cuando los árabes abandonaron España, en 1489, pasó a ser propiedad del alcalde Francisco Ramírez de Madrid, nombrado por los Reyes Católicos. Yo alucino pensando que ese castillo, que se conserva bastante bien, tiene allí 8 siglos. Qué increíble. ¿Sabes la cantidad de cosas que pueden pasar en 8 siglos? Invasiones, terremotos, incendios. Este majestuoso monumento ha sobrevivido casi intacto todo ese tiempo. Te comparto algunas fotos para que lo veas.

Greetings, dear readers, with this article I'll continue my tour of cities and places in Spain, the country where I currently reside. I've previously published several articles about Spanish cities I've visited. I've dedicated several blog posts to Barcelona, Nerja, Frigiliana, Granada, and Málaga. Join me today as I visit Salobreña, a small town on the Andalusian coast, located 65 kilometers from Granada, between the cities of Motril and Almuñécar.
DISCOVERING SPAIN: Salobreña Castle
Perhaps, like me, you enjoy medieval stories—those tales of heroes and villains, of power and tragedy, of impossible love—that take place behind the walls of a castle. Although in reality, in most cases, these castles were forts, they were built as military defenses against possible barbarian or pirate invasions. Several communication routes pass through the city, allowing you to get there: the A-7 Algeciras-Barcelona Mediterranean Highway, the N-323 Bailén-Motril Sierra Nevada Highway, and the N-340 Cadiz-Barcelona Mediterranean Highway.
The road to the castle
Like most towns on Spain's tropical coast, Salobreña has a pleasant climate year-round, ranging from 24 degrees Celsius in summer to 12 degrees Celsius in winter. Although the town has five beaches: El Cambrón, El Caletón, La Guardia, Salomar or de la Charca, and Punta del Río, its most important tourist attraction is undoubtedly the castle and the pretty streets that lead to it. But to take this walk, you have to enjoy walking. You'll come across cobblestone streets with windows adorned with flowers, poems, and texts that tell you about the city. It's a worthwhile journey, but you have to enjoy walking. I'm sharing some photos I took.

The Castle
The history of the city dates back to the ancient Phoenicians, who apparently gave it its original name, "Segalvina," Sel ('stream') and -amsina or -ansina, from the Indo-European root *m°bhi ('around'), used in Old Irish to mean 'enclosed'. This is how the Romans, who later settled it, recorded it. The Arabs, who conquered it a few centuries later, called it "Shalubānya," also pronounced Shalubīnya (from which its current name comes).
Salobreña Castle, declared a Spanish Historical Heritage Site, which I invite you to visit if you live or pass through the province of Granada, was built in the 15th century as a defensive fortification. During the Nasrid period, it was a prison, serving as the residence of several Mozarabic monarchs: Yusuf III, Muhammad VIII the Little, Muhammad IX the Left-Handed, Abu Nasr Sad, and Muley Hacén.
But after the Reconquista, when the Arabs left Spain in 1489, it became the property of Mayor Francisco Ramírez of Madrid, appointed by the Catholic Monarchs. I'm amazed to think that this castle, which is quite well preserved, has been there for eight centuries. How incredible. Do you know how many things can happen in eight centuries? Invasions, earthquakes, fires. This majestic monument has survived almost intact all that time. I'm sharing some photos so you can see it.
