CONOCIENDO ESPAÑA: LA HERRADURA: MI HOGAR EN LA COSTA DEL SOL
Saludos, amigos lectores, con este artículo voy a continuar mi recorrido por ciudades y lugares de España, país donde resido en la actualidad. Con anterioridad he publicado varios artículos sobre ciudades españolas que he visitado. Dediqué varios artículos de mi blog a Barcelona, Nerja, Frigiliana, Granada, Málaga, Salobreña. Acompáñenme hoy a visitar LA HERRADURA, la pequeña ciudad de la costa andaluza, donde resido en la actualidad, ubicada en el municipio Almuñécar, a hora y media de las ciudades de Málaga y Granada. Es parte de la provincia de Granada. Las ciudades más cercanas son Almuñécar, capital del municipio y Nerja.
La ciudad donde crecí, Caracas, está cerca del mar. Desde pequeños los caraqueños nos acostumbramos a visitar las playas del cercano litoral. En automóvil llegamos en menos de una hora. El mar para mí es el paisaje que más disfruto. Desde que llegué a España en mayo vivo muy cerca del mar, en La Herradura, un poblado de playa, a orillas del mar Mediterráneo. Recordé hace poco que en mis artículos sobre España no había escrito sobre el lugar donde vivo y pensé que era importante hacerlo. Por eso dedicaré estas líneas para presentarles dónde está mi hogar. Acompáñame.
La playa
El nombre del pueblo, La Herradura, hace referencia a la forma en herradura de su bahía. Puedes atravesarlo caminando de un extremo a otro, por su avenida principal, Av. Andrés Segovia, en poco más de media hora. Y sólo verás una cosa: mar. Es el principal encanto que tiene. Cuando llegué por primera vez no podía dejar de ver el mar, y aún ahora, varios meses después, cuando bajo a la playa, sigue hechizándome, a cualquier hora. Pero especialmente al atardecer. Cuando el sol cae, y la luz se va apagando, los últimos destellos del sol brillando cerca del horizonte, son un espectáculo único. Te comparto algunas fotos que tomé.

Los turistas españoles e internacionales vienen a La Herradura a disfrutar de la playa y a practicar deportes acuáticos. Muy especialmente, el buceo. Sus centros de buceo son unos de los más prestigiosos del sur peninsular. Un mes atrás tuve la oportunidad de hacer mi bautizo, al bucear por primera vez en su bahía. También puedes practicar windsurf, remo. Como es un pueblo pequeño muchas de sus calles son estrechas y de piedra.

En verano, La Herradura se llena de turistas que invaden el tranquilo pueblo de playa. Entre julio y agosto no recomiendo visitarlo. Demasiadas personas aglomeradas en un pueblo pequeño, demasiado bullicio y ruido, desde temprano no hay lugar donde aparcar el coche, para comer en los diversos restaurantes y chiringuitos que hay tienes que hacer cola para poder entrar. Para disfrutarlo es mejor que lo visites fuera de temporada. El cambio es radical. El otoño o el invierno es un mejor momento. Si prefieres disfrutar de la playa en verano…ya sabes que están llenas de turistas locales y extranjeros. Nada que hacer.
El castillo
Muchas de las ciudades costeras de España tienen cerca de la playa algún castillo o fortín de piedra, los cuales fueron construidos para defenderse de las incursiones de los bárbaros o piratas que saqueaban las ciudades. La Herradura tienen como uno de sus atractivos turísticos un castillo. Fue construido en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, durante el reinado de Carlos III. Está conformado por un recinto rectangular con una fachada principal orientada al norte, unas torres semicirculares en los ángulos Noreste y Noroeste, y en el Sur de la construcción hay una gran batería semicircular para la artillería, donde todavía pueden verse los cañones que utilizaban para la defensa.
Desde 2021 se inauguró en el castillo el Museo "1562 La Fuerza del Mar" para recordar un desastre naval ocurrido en esa fecha en la bahía de La Herradura, en el cual naufragaron 25 buques de la flota española que transportaban a 4.000 soldados para el refuerzo de Orán y Mazlquivir. No hubo sobrevivientes.

Desde que llegué a La Herradura me he sentido a gusto. Me incorporé al Club de Lectura que se reúne en la biblioteca del Centro Cívico, al Coro Rociero y en días recientes a un grupo de intercambio inglés-español, en el que los vecinos que hablamos español mejoramos nuestro dominio del inglés y quienes hablan inglés mejoran su dominio del español. Aquí en La Herradura han establecido su hogar personas de distintas nacionalidades, latinoamericanos, ingleses, alemanes, suecos, estadounidenses, chinos.

In summer, La Herradura fills up with tourists who invade the quiet beach town. I don't recommend visiting between July and August. Too many people crowded into a small town, too much hustle and bustle and noise, no place to park your car from early on, and you have to queue to get into the various restaurants and beach bars. To enjoy it, it's best to visit out of season. The change is radical. Fall or winter is a better time. If you prefer to enjoy the beach in summer...you know that they are full of local and foreign tourists. Nothing to do.

Many of Spain's coastal towns have a stone castle or fort near the beach, which were built to defend against incursions by barbarians or pirates who plundered the towns. La Herradura has a castle as one of its tourist attractions. It was built in the second half of the 18th century, during the reign of Charles III. It consists of a rectangular enclosure with a main façade facing north, semicircular towers at the northeast and northwest corners, and a large semicircular battery for artillery on the south side of the building, where the cannons used for defense can still be seen.
