Welcome back, Splinterfam!

This week, it’s all about skins. Yep, those flashy, shiny, stylish looks for our favorite units.

Normally, I’m not a big fan of cosmetic updates. Especially when they come with a price tag. I’ve always been the type who prefers upgrades that actually improve my gameplay rather than just how my cards/avatars look on the battlefield. But this time… things feel different.

The new skins hit differently. I really like that I can spend Glint, something I’ve actually earned through playing matches, to give my cards a fresh new look. That simple change makes all the difference. It feels like a reward for playing, not just another sink for DEC or SPS. It’s nice to give your deck a bit of personality without having to open your wallet.

And yes… I went "all" in. I spent 81,500 Glint on skins! That’s no small amount, especially with the new reward set just around the corner. The skins look fantastic, and it’s nice to have something visual to show for all the battles I’ve been grinding through.

Now, these skins aren’t tradable or sellable in-game (at least not yet). But they can be traded through custom JSON transactions, meaning peer-to-peer deals are possible if you really want to move them around. There’s even an official guide from the Splinterlands support team that explains how that works, definitely worth checking out if you’re curious --> Transfering Skins via custom json.

Eventually these skins will find their way into the non-card market, where they can be listed, bought, and sold easily like other items. That would make collecting and trading them a whole new layer of fun.

Ultimate Chest Skins

The second way to get skins is through Ultimate Chests, and wow, those are flying out like crazy! I can’t even find the right word to describe how fast they’re going. Whether it’s whales spending massive Glint stacks or lucky smaller players pulling rare drops, some of these skins are down to just one or two left. It’s pretty wild.

My plan is to wait until Tuesday before opening my chests since that’s when the new reward set will be added. Even if the price of Ultimate Chests is higher, they’ll include the new reward cards too. Which feels like a win-win to me. If by then most of them are gone, I’ll switch strategies and grab a few Major Chests instead. In my opinion, they still offer better value overall in terms of both the number of chests and the total chances per Glint spent.

The Look and Feel Update

The skins themselves look incredible. I also noticed something new on the battlefield, the Arcane cards stand out a lot more now. Maybe it came in the last patch, or maybe it was there for a while and I just didn’t pay attention, but the visual effect is super clean and really makes the Arcane units pop during battles.

Here’s a small but great tip I got from @lilyfire, turn on the sound!

I usually play with the sound off, mostly because I often juggle multiple accounts at once and don’t want the extra noise. But when I actually turned the sound on, I was surprised by how good it was.

The new rule set sounds are amazing. When a match is found and the rulesets are revealed, you get this powerful audio cue that really sets the mood. Combine that with the updated visuals and particle effects on Black Foil Arcanes and Gold Foil Arcanes, and it feels like fresh again.

Overall, this update gave me a really good vibe. Sure, the economics are important, it’s a web3 game after all, so it all ties together. Updates like this are what keep the game side alive. We also need some bigger changes but the team is at least working on those like guild overhaul / land cards those will shake things up a bit...

That’s all for this week. I hope you’re enjoying the new skins and effects as much as I am.

See you all on the battlefield
