Sometimes, I imagine waking up one morning to find a bag full of money beside my bed, no strings attached, just mine to use however I want. Then a voice tells me, “You can either stay in Nigeria forever or relocate permanently to another country.” Honestly, I won’t even need a whole minute to decide. I will pack my bags and head straight to the United Kingdom.
I am a Nigerian lady, born and raised here. I spent my childhood and teenage years in Nigeria, right up until I finished secondary school. Nigeria will always be home, but I have always dreamed of living my life outside the country, especially when it’s time for me to settle down. The thought of starting fresh in a place I’ve always admired excites me. And the good part is, relocating doesn’t mean I can’t visit. I can always come back home to spend time with my family and friends, enjoy Nigerian food, and then return to the UK to continue my life.
Why the UK? It’s simple. I love the environment, the orderliness, the opportunities, and the security it offers. Nigeria is beautiful in its own way, but let’s be honest sometimes, progress here feels like it’s based on “who you know” rather than what you can do. I don’t have those strong connections, so opportunities can easily pass me by. But in the UK, I believe hard work, skill, and consistency are more likely to get you noticed.
Another reason is the lifestyle. I’ve never been someone who likes to show off or live extravagantly. My ideal life is a simple, peaceful one where I can work, pay my bills, and enjoy small pleasures without unnecessary stress. In the UK, I might not be able to do some things freely like I can here in Nigeria because of their laws, but that doesn’t bother me. I like living within my means, and I respect rules that help keep society in order.
With a huge sum of money, relocating would give me the chance to set up a comfortable life from the start, maybe start a small business, get a good place to live, and invest in my personal growth. I could also explore education opportunities, because studying in the UK has always been one of my silent wishes.
I know that living abroad isn’t all rosy. The cold weather, the high cost of living, and sometimes the feeling of missing home are real. But for me, the benefits outweigh the challenges. I see relocation as a way to open my life to better possibilities, things I might not be able to achieve if I remain in Nigeria.
So yes, if I’m ever given that life changing amount of money, I will gladly choose the UK. Nigeria will always be my root, but the UK will be the place I grow my branches. I believe sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone to become the best version of yourself, and for me, that step is a one way ticket to the United Kingdom.
