Two weeks of runaway growth!

 Arrrgh... spring is well and truly here in the great southern lands... and I'm a LONG LONG way behind after being on tour for the last couple of weeks. I'm back home for a day... packed with teaching, before heading off again. And it is crazy how much everything has grown in the intervening time... ... thankfully, my mum is here visiting and helping out whilst I'm away. And she does spend her days in the garden helping to try and keep things in check. But what it really needs is a sustained full family effort to get all the jobs done and completed! Just so that we aren't chasing the rampant growth... running to stay still! At the front, we really should have had the climbing wires ready for the roses... my wife said that she would be doing it after I kept forgetting... a year ago... and so the climbing roses are now everywhere! We really should prune them back and get those wires set... I think I will end up doing them... my wife will talk about how they aren't done, and how she will do them... but in the end, I think if I don't do them, we will still be talking about it in a decade from now.  But even with the lack of care... they are coming up with roses!  Meanwhile, all is full steam ahead with the veggie planers... the Gai Choi (Chinese Mustard Green) is growing strong.. but the kids and wife find them too bitter... I like them, a bit of oyster sauce and ginger, and they are great. But there is a majority against planting them again. In the back, the beets are going strong... as are the parsley topped turnips. I think I will have to start testing to see if they are ready to harvest or not.  Okay... the Rainbow Chard is really out of control... we can't eat them fast enough, even with the extended family helping out! I think we will soon have think about finishing the growths, they are starting to look a bit funny on the top. Pull them out, cook what we can and then reclaim the space for a different veggie!  Carrots look to be also going well... and I'm going to have to start figuring out when to harvest those... and the sage and coriander seem to be doing fine as well! Nice mix of herbs...  The strawberries are starting to produce as well... but the little French ones on the far side didn't manage to take by the looks of it. Pity... I was looking forward to the little taste bombs!  Meanwhile, at the back, the fruit trees are fully awake again. The stakes needed to be reset and the rebanded... but my mum handled that! It is possible that this might be the first year that we will take fruit from them? The previous year, we did have one little lemon, but my wife read that you shouldn't let it fruit in the first year as it detracts from the growing of the tree... so it was cut off.  ... and lastly, the kiwivine is now reaching for the sky again! I'm starting to think that I might need to prune the side shoots so that it is more focused on growing longer to cover the patio skeleton. But on the other hand, it does seem to be doing fine...
