Anime Is Brain Food

For as long as I can remember, anime has been a part of my life, not just as entertainment, but as a genuine source of inspiration and mental stimulation. I’ve often heard people dismiss anime as cartoons for kids, but i feel that perspective is so narrow that it misses the deeper impact this medium has on those who engage with it. In fact, research shows that people who regularly watch anime tend to have higher intelligence and stronger problem solving skills. That doesn’t surprise me at all, when you immerse yourself in anime, you aren’t just watching flashy fights or colorful characters as most people think, what you're doing is exposing your mind to new worlds, ideas, philosophies, and possibilities. photo-1613376023733-0a73315d9b06.jpeg Source

Whenever I watch anime, I feel like my brain is not just entertained but actively challenged. These stories go far beyond the surface level of action; they dive into deep social and philosophical issues. Each time I watch something like this, I feel my mind expand in ways that ordinary daily routines or even many Western shows rarely offer.

Another underrated way anime builds intelligence is through subtitles and color design. Most anime is in Japanese, which means many of us watch it with subtitles, this simple act of reading while simultaneously watching forces the brain to process visual and textual data at the same time. At first, it feels challenging, but over time, your brain adapts and becomes faster at filtering, analyzing, and understanding information. I’ve noticed that my reading speed and comprehension have improved dramatically just by following subtitles. It trains your brain to multitask as you're absorbing dialogue, reading text, and interpreting body language all in seconds.

The color combinations in anime are another form of mental training. Unlike many live action shows, anime uses deliberate color choices to reflect moods, themes, and even foreshadow events. Bright palettes, surreal contrasts, and symbolic designs force your brain to constantly adapt and interpret meaning from visual cues, when you’re exposed to this kind of stimulation, your visual processing sharpens. Personally, I’ve found that I can notice small details, color patterns, or even emotional cues in real life faster because my brain has been trained by anime’s unique art styles. It’s almost like my mind is constantly exercising in the background, improving the speed at which I process data without me even realizing it.

Am not saying this because I'm an anime fan but one of the biggest misconceptions about anime is that it’s childish. People assume that because it’s animated, it must be simple or immature but the reality is the opposite. Anime is diverse, it ranges from lighthearted comedies to profound dramas that wrestle with themes like war, love, grief, identity, and the meaning of life. For instance, when I first watched Your Lie in April,* I didn’t just see a love story; I experienced a narrative about trauma, healing, and the courage to face the world again after pain. That show stayed with me for weeks, reminding me of the resilience of the human spirit. How can anyone say that’s childish?

What makes anime truly powerful is the way it keeps you open minded. The worlds it presents are not limited by our everyday rules of reality. You’ll see futuristic technologies, ancient philosophies, alternate universes, or even spiritual dimensions all carefully blended into human stories. This constant exposure to “what if” trains the mind to imagine, to explore beyond the ordinary, and to think of possibilities that others might overlook. In a way, watching anime feels like exercising a muscle, the muscle of imagination and critical thinking.

That’s why I often wish everyone around me could watch anime, not because I want them to share my hobby, but because I know how much it could open their minds and hearts. Too many people live inside narrow boxes; the work, stress routine and they lose touch with imagination and wonder. Anime offers a way to reconnect with that, It reminds us that life is bigger than the small space we often confine ourselves to. It sparks creativity, inspires courage, and sometimes even gives answers to the questions we’re too afraid to ask out loud.

When people tell me anime is childish, I just smile. If being childish means keeping a sense of wonder, curiosity, and openness to new perspectives, then maybe we all need a little more of that. After all, some of the greatest thinkers in history were the ones who refused to stop imagining, even as adults. Watching anime doesn’t make you less mature honestly, it makes you more aware, more empathetic, and more thoughtful. It gives you the ability to see the world not just as it is, but as it could be.

For me, anime isn’t just about sitting in front of a screen, it’s about keeping my mind sharp, my heart open, my imagination alive and becoming more creative. And if intelligence is the ability to think beyond limits and embrace possibilities, then yes, anime does make people more intelligent.
