Weekend Experience Part II: The Tile Hunt

Last Saturday looked a bit different from the previous few days – this time it was my fiancé, my sister, and me on the hunt, while my sister’s boyfriend stayed at home to continue studying for his exam. The three of us set off to visit a couple of ceramic showrooms, ready to dive deep into the world of tiles.

Of course, even though the main mission was to look at tiles, my sister and I couldn’t resist getting distracted by the endless displays of mirrors and cute bathroom cabinets. Everything looked so beautiful and stylish that it was almost impossible to walk past without stopping.

My fiancé and I had a pretty clear idea of what we wanted from the start: some striking blue tiles for the shower wall as a focal point, paired with light, white tiles for the rest of the walls to open up the space. The bigger question was what to do with the floor. We went back and forth for quite a while about the color, size, and finish. The challenge is that we’ll be laying them ourselves – just the two of us ❤️– so it has to be practical as well as pretty.

Right now, we’re leaning towards 60x60 floor tiles in a matte finish, probably in shades of white, beige, or gray. Something simple, but elegant and timeless.

And then, of course, comes my favorite part – choosing the mirror! I know I’ve said it before, but I just can’t help myself when it comes to mirrors. I don’t imagine anything too extravagant, just something functional and clean. Maybe that wooden-framed mirror with soft lighting I snapped a selfie with – it struck the perfect balance between cozy and modern. What’s important to me is that the mirror stays separate from the sink and cabinet, so it doesn’t get messy like in most standard bathrooms. But those details will come later, once we’re past the big decision: the tiles.

Oh, and speaking of details, I couldn’t resist snapping a picture of that showroom bathtub setup with a TV mounted in front of it. Totally over the top, but I had to send it to my sister’s boyfriend as a joke – since he spends most of his home time in the bathroom, he’d probably treat it like his office. That’s just us, born in ’97 and ’98 – not too serious, not too crazy, somewhere in between. 😄

But honestly, it’s those little details that make a home special. I’ve already pictured a lush green plant in the bathroom – something that thrives in humidity and heat (since we girls usually shower in steaming hot water). I know, I know, not the healthiest routine, but I’m working on it!

As for the tiles, we narrowed it down to a few options. One was this brick-like blue design, and another in a lighter shade. They looked much nicer online than in real life, so we’ll probably pass on those. Pretty, yes – but not exactly what we had in mind.

I think we’re overthinking it a little. It’s not like there’s a huge way to go wrong, and luckily, whatever we pick, we always run it by my fiancé’s sister, who’s an architect. Once she gives her approval, it’s time to buy, wait for the delivery, and then start laying them down. Before that, of course, we need to apply a waterproofing layer. After that – game on. I can’t wait. Our plan is to finish everything before winter so that we can enjoy our brand-new bathroom while it’s snowing outside. 😍

Oh, and before I wrap this up – I have to mention how much I’ve fallen in love with retro faucets. You know, the kind with separate handles for hot and cold water? They’re just so charming! I wouldn’t want them to be too low, though – I have in my mind something tall, like real vintage pieces standing proudly above the sink. And in gold or bronze, please… that would be such a statement, and so perfectly “old-meets-new.”

Until my next blog, wishing you all a wonderful day! 💛
