In today's post, I want to talk about the hazelnut season, a regular part of August in Ordu. Every job has its challenges. I respect every job and every worker. But hazelnut season is an extremely tiring and stressful adventure. Many people want to escape Ordu in August. And some even manage to make excuses. But word of mouth always gets around: "Even if you're the president, you'll come and pick those hazelnuts." This is an unwritten rule. Civil servants who own hazelnuts also time their annual leave during the hazelnut season. They're picking their hazelnuts. So, they can't escape hazelnut season.

When I was little, I used to wait for the school day to start, hoping I wouldn't have to pick hazelnuts. But this year, I came willingly. 🙂 Yes, we'd already started harvesting hazelnuts. Because of the winter frost, the hazelnut blossoms were affected by the cold. Consequently, the hazelnut crop was scarce. We never went into some of the gardens because there weren't any. The gardens without hazelnuts were the ones overlooking the sea, which was affected by the cold winds and frost that blew in from the sea in winter. The gardens without the sea had excellent hazelnut yields.
Küçükken okullar başlasa da fındık toplamasam diye okul yolunu gözlerdim. Ama bu yıl kendi isteğimle geldim.🙂 Evet artık fındığa başlamıştık. Kışın don olayı olduğu için fındığın çiçekleri soğuktan etkilenmiş. Haliyle fındık da az olmuş. Bazı bahçelere hiç girmedik. Çünkü hiç fındık olmamıştı. Fındık olmayan bahçeler denizi gören ve kışın denizden esen soğuk rüzgarların ve don olayının etkisinde kalan bahçelerimizdi. Denizi görmeyen bahçelerimizde ise çok iyi fındık olmuştu.
We have three orchards around our house, the other hazelnut orchards are far away. I prefer to harvest hazelnuts in our orchards closer to home. We don't get up too early in the morning and take tea breaks whenever possible. We usually take a two-hour break after lunch. We love this activity. However, because the conditions in our orchards further away are difficult, we can't take this tea break.

We started hazelnut harvesting in the garden around our first house. The hazelnut yields were excellent in this garden. The weather wasn't too hot, and there was a cool breeze. So, we got off to a good start with hazelnut harvesting.

They were slowly walking away, occasionally glancing at us. They couldn't come to the water because we were there instead of them. Normally, they run away when they see people. But this was the first time I'd seen them approach people. And it was the first time I'd seen them this close. When I wanted to take a photo, I moved a little closer. As soon as I took a step, they started running away. I couldn't take a photo.

We call the place where we dry hazelnuts the hazelnut harvest. I wanted to be the first to spread the hazelnuts on the harvest. We harvested a good amount of hazelnuts the first day. But farther away in our gardens, there are hazelnut orchards that ripen earlier. The hazelnuts fall into the stream and are lost with the water. So, we went to our hazelnut orchard the second day, which ripened earlier. In previous years, it took us three days to harvest the orchard we harvested the second day. But this year, the frost had affected the hazelnut harvest, so there were very few. We harvested them in one day.

We use a farm vehicle called a "pat-pat" to get to distant orchards. But most of the time, we had to walk because the roads were dangerous. I really don't like walking. We also transport hazelnuts with this farm vehicle. Until 10 years ago, they used horses to transport hazelnuts. Now, the "pat-pat" is truly very practical and saves time.

We have gardens that border a stream. This garden is one of them. It's nice to have a stream, but it's very steep. The steeper the slope, the more tired we get. The trees are large, and bending them down is very difficult. To relieve some of this fatigue, we dip our feet in the stream. It's truly beneficial. It's especially good when it's warm. Of course, just as a stream has its advantages, it also has its disadvantages. Because the garden is steep, you have to be very careful around the stream banks. People have fallen into the lake many times before. But this year, we finished the garden without any such incidents.

Despite the challenging garden paths, the sloping gardens, and the large hazelnut trees, our distant gardens were finished. Finally, we had only one garden left, next to your house. It was the last garden. The weather surprised us. After sunny weather, we had one last garden left, but it rained. Since the hazelnut trees were open, we covered them with a tent. But the wind caused us considerable difficulty. Fortunately, despite this difficulty, we managed to cover them. Because of the rain, we didn't go to the garden that day. The next two days later, our garden was finished. So, the hazelnut season ended.

The hazelnuts were now ready for harvesting, but the hazelnut harvesting process wasn't over. A machine called a thresher grinds the hazelnuts into kernels. This is how the hazelnuts are separated from their pods. While the thresher separates the rotten and empty hazelnuts, these rotten hazelnuts are still mixed in with the healthy hazelnuts. The thresher doesn't remove the pods from the fresh hazelnuts. We select these from the hazelnuts. The selection process is complete.

All that's left is drying and then bagging. Drying is easy if there's sunlight. It's much more difficult if there's no sunlight. Because Ordu is a place with a lot of rain, September is usually rainy. We're eagerly awaiting the sun. This year, after a week of rain, the sun has finally come out.
