Today I'm delighted because after traveling 100 km from Lisbon, I was able to visit one of the castles I've been wanting to see since I joined HIVE. A while back, I wrote a post where I mentioned my goal of getting to know all of Portugal's wonderful fortifications. I've actually lost count, but I must have visited more than 30 in total! From what I was able to explore, this is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved in the southern region (Alentejo).🧭📸

We are in the village of Santiago de Cacem, located in the Alentejo region. This is the south of the country, where the climate is more desert-like, a large area of valleys without mountains. However, in spring, we see a great diversity of flowering shrubs that decorate the landscape majestically. To enjoy the experience, the village created a route called "Vicentina," which consists of a 23-km hike that covers a large part of the Alentejo villages.🌍📸
Estamos en la Aldea de Santiago de Cacem, que se encuentra en la región de Alentejo, esto es el sur del país donde el clima es más desértico, una gran zona de valles sin montañas; sin embargo, en primavera vemos una gran diversidad de arbustos con flores que decoran el paisaje de manera majestuosa, para disfrutar de la experiencia la villa creo una ruta llamada: "Vicentina", la cual consta de una caminata de 23 km y recorrer una gran parte de las aldeas de Alentejo.🚩🌷

In the nineties the church was declared a national historic monument, this church was built by the Knights Templar around the 13th century after the subsequent conquests of Henrique to conquer the Portuguese territory from the Arabs in the 10th century. It was rebuilt on several occasions and suffered great damage in 1755 with the earthquake, its Gothic-Romanesque style stands out.🌄🧭
En la década de los noventa la iglesia fue declarada como monumento histórico nacional, esta iglesia fue construida por los caballeros templarios a eso del siglo XIII luego de las conquistas posteriores de Henrique para conquistar el territorio Portugués de los árabes en el siglo X. Se reconstruyo en varias ocasiones y sufrió grandes danos en 1755 con el terremoto, destaca su estilo gotico-romanico🏰😱
I was very lucky when I arrived, the church was closing; it was midday! The lady kindly asked me if I'd like to come in and take some photos quickly, so I did. To avoid the church closure, I recommend using Gmaps for information. The Brazilian lady who helped me was very kind. There are churches where they don't let you take photos.🧭🌄
¡Tuve mucha suerte cuando llegue la iglesia estaba cerrando, era medio día! la señora amablemente me dijo si quiere pasas y tiras unas fotos rápido y así hice, les recomiendo para evitar que esté cerrado guiarse con el horario en Gmaps, muy amable la senora brasilena que me atendio, hay iglesias donde no te dejan tomar fotos.🌷🚩🌻

The castle has a garden where we can walk at no additional cost, and it also has some benches where we can rest. I read that this garden was built along with a chapel by a duke who lived in Santiago de Cacem in the 18th century (Count of Avilez), who were practically the richest people on the site.🌍📍

El castillo tiene un jardín donde podemos pasear sin costo adicional, además que tiene unas bancas para poder descansar, lei que este jardín fue construido junto con una capilla por un duque que vivio en Santiago de Cacem en el siglo XVIII (conde de avilez), practicamente eran las personas más ricas del sitio.🗺️🚩

The main function of the castle was its construction to protect the waters of the Atlantic and the port of Sines where a large number of commercial ships circulate and at that time it was not very different, despite being located in the south it is less than 20 km from the Atlantic coast, before any advanced civilization arrived a nomadic Celtic people had inhabited this region.🌄🧭

After the Celts between the 1st century AD, the Romans arrived to the Iberian Peninsula and occupied Santiago de Cacem, it was at the point in the history of the city that grew in demographics and economy, at that point it was called "mirobriga", between the 6th and 8th centuries it was occupied by Vigoths and finally by the Moors.📸🧭
Posterior a los Celtas entre el siglo I despues de cristo, llegaron los Romanos hasta la peninsula iberica y ocuparon Santiago de Cacem, fue en el punto de la historia de la ciudad que crecio en demografia y economia, en ese punto se llamo "mirobriga", entre los siglos VI hasta el VIII fue ocupado por vicigodos y por ultimo por los Moros.🌄😱

The great conqueror Henrique took Santiago de Cacem from the Moors in 1158, however the Arabs recovered the castle in 1190 until 1191 in 1186 some cities of Portugal belonged to the Order of Santiago, and it was King Afonso II who would fight the battle to recover the castle again in 1211. It has a rectangular plan with traces of Arab architecture, it has 10 semicircular towers that reinforce the wall.🚩🌍
El gran conquistador Henrique tomo Santiago de Cacem de los moros en 1158, sin embargo los arabes recuperaron el castillo en 1190 hasta 1191 en 1186 algunas ciudades de Portugal pertenecian a la Orden de Santiago, y fue el rey Alfonso II quien libraria la batalla para recuperar de nuevo el castillo en el 1211. Presenta una planta rectangular con aun trazos de arquitectura Arabe, presenta 10 torres semicirculares que refuerzan la muralla.📸🧭
As all the castles in Portugal are losing their military interest, they begin to deteriorate and become abandoned, such is the case of this one that in the 18th century had no use, at that time it was used as a place to build a cemetery in the town.🌍🚩
Como todos los castillos de Portugal van perdiendo interes belico, y comienzan a deteriorarse y abandonarse, tal es el caso de este que en el siglo XVIII no tenia ningun uso, en ese momento se utilizó como un lugar para construir un cementerio en la villa.🗺️🌄
