Hello friends, a new adventure is coming. I've already accomplished my personal goal of visiting more than thirty castles in Portugal. I'm aiming to visit them all and create a superpost recounting my experience in the community, but I still have many more to go, and I need to be patient! Today we're going to explore Montalegre Castle. To do so, I had to travel almost 300 km north to the border with Spain.🌄🏰

In reality, we would have to travel to Montalegre to reach this castle. It's more likely that you'll do so if you stayed in Porto than from Lisbon, because it's more than a six-hour drive from our capital. The name "Montalegre" is due to the city, whose origins date back to 1273, in the middle of the medieval era, possibly during the reign of Alfonso the Conqueror. However, it's worth noting that there are archaeological records indicating that this area had been populated since the Iron Age.😮🌄
En realidad tendríamos que viajar a Montalegre para poder llegar a este castillo, es más probable que lo hagas si te quedaste en Porto que de Lisboa, porque desde nuestra capital son más de 6 horas de viaje, el nombre "Montalegre" se debe a la ciudad cuyos orígenes se remontan al 1273 en plena era medieval posiblemente en el reinado de Alfonso el conquistador; sin embargo, cabe resaltar que hay registros arqueológicos que esta zona desde la era de hierro había sido poblada.🚙🏰
The Celts were the second civilization to arrive in the area and populate Montalegre. However, they were not as structured, but they left a beautiful legacy: the "castros," which in Portuguese refer to citadels with stone constructions. When we moved on to the Romanization period, the Romans took advantage of the Celtic "castros" and built on top of them, modernizing the architecture with courtyards and water channels. Today we can see many of these vestiges in the area of: "Mourela, Veiga."🚙🚩🗺️
Los celtas fueron la segunda "civilización" en llegar a la zona y poblar Montalegre, sin embargo, no eran tan estructurados, pero dejaron un hermoso legado los "castros" que en Portugués se hace referencia a ciudadelas con construcciones de piedras, cuando pasamos a la época de Romanización los romanos aprovecharon los "castros" de los celtas y construyeron encima de ellos pero modernizando la arquitectura con patios y canaletas de agua. This is one of the few towns in Portugal where the Arabs did not arrive in the post-Roman centuries, according to no information exists of their presence, therefore we would also say that it is one of the "purest" cities in lineage from King Henrique in the 10th century.🌍📍

Overall, Montalegre, during the hours I spent exploring it, is a very pretty, clean, and fairly quiet town. It's not overcrowded with tourists due to its northern location. It has all the amenities, from public transportation (buses) to large supermarkets; nice, affordable restaurants; and even small hotels and inns. If you only want to stay for a day or two, it's perfect; beyond that, there's not much to see, unless you take the trails here that climb the mountains.🧭🚩
En términos generales, Montalegre en las horas que la estuve explorando es una villa muy bonita, limpia, y bastante tranquila, no está abarrotada de turismo por su localización tan al norte, tiene todos los servicios, desde transporte público "autobuses" hasta supermercados grandes; restaurantes bonitos y económicos e inclusive pequeños hoteles y posadas. Si solo quieres quedarte uno o dos días es perfecto ahora más que eso ya no hay mucho que ver, al menos que hagas los senderos que están aquí que suben las montañas.📸🚙
