BLINGIT STUDIOS – Day 5: A Slice of Orange and a Dash of Chaos

Follow an Aussie ballet mum & artist as I chase that monthly posting badge!

A Quick Little Daily Painting 🍊

Alright — technically I painted this one yesterday, but I wanted to get ahead of myself and have the piece done before the post.
Turns out I didn’t need to stress. .. From opening the paint tubes to snapping the photo, this took about thirty minutes, tops.

The only prep I’d done earlier was a quick sketch on the canvas — so we’ll call that fair play.
Fastest painting session I’ve had in a while!

A Bit of Life in Between

Today was full-on: PT in the morning, then straight to physio.
For those who don’t know, I injured my hand about three years ago — some nerve damage to both the ulnar and AIN nerves (for anyone medically minded).
It still gives me plenty of grief, so I have to plan painting sessions carefully.
Once the thumb cramps, that’s it — brushes down.

That’s part of why I like short, intense daily paintings. They’re just enough to keep me creative without pushing the hand too far.

Colours & Chaos 🎨

Palette organisation?
Let’s just say not my finest hour.
I usually lay out colours neatly, but somehow ended up with purple next to white and yellows miles from the orange. OCD nightmare. 😅

Anyway, here’s the lineup:

  • White (no black at all this time)
  • Dioxazine Purple
  • Cadmium Red Light
  • Background: Chromium Green Oxide, a dash of Phthalo Green, bits of Dioxazine, Ultramarine, and warm + cool Cad Yellows (yes… that’s a lot for green)
  • The orange: Cad Orange, both Cad Yellows, and occasional touches of Blue or Burnt Sienna to tone it down.

Process

Super simple: 1. Mix the green → paint the green.
2. Mix the pink → paint the pink.
3. Block in the deep orange across the slice.
4. Build up lighter tones while it’s still wet.
5. Adjust the background so the white pith pops against the darker green.
6. Knock back the contrast on the “horizon” line left and right (the right could’ve gone softer, but close enough).

And just like that — brushes washed, done and dusted.

No AI here, just my real paint and my dodgy, slightly rebellious hand.

Studio Musings 🖌️

Thinking I might start on tomorrow’s painting tonight — the brushes are still damp, and I’ve already made a mess, so why not?

I do need to order more of my favourite mini canvases though.
This one’s about 10 cm square, but my favourite size is 12 cm — hard to find!
Last time I ordered 100, the supplier found about 20 in a dusty storeroom and cancelled the rest… cries

What creative thing have you done today?

Tell me in the comments — I genuinely love reading what everyone’s working on, even if it’s completely different.
Music, gaming, gardening, crafts — bring it on!

Thanks for stopping by and keeping me company through this challenge. or not... you guys are slack!! 💛
