Can we all just assume the fact that i have actually been keeping up with Hive Garden, (I actaully have) despite my lack of posts. I DO actaully pop in to read and throw a few comments. I HAVE started about 5 posts since last i posted. But never finished any of them. And like all things garden, one week after i take photos or write a post its all no longer valid at all.

the flowers have grown, a storm has destroyed the chickens have devoured... you know the gist.

So here we are on a lazy sunday in between the obligatory Dance Competitions (my kids dance, dance mums know what this means) im going to 100% post this bloody post!!! lol

What Has been Happening (History Recap)?

Well as many of you know, we had a concrete jungle, which we could not rip up so we garden on top in pots and raised beds. Urban Backyard, Brisbane, Australia. The previous owners just planted yukky yukka trees RIGHT ALONG a retaining wall and 1 foot from the pool. So we ripped everything out and planted flowers and edibles.

Below is the garden when we moved in - green - but nothing to eat.

Here you can see the big gardens we built at the back

Flowers Flowers Flowers

We have had a great winter full of amazing produce. Lots of leafy greens and peas and beautiful flowers. Here you can see some of the late winter flowers that are blooming in the garden at the moment. The bees are very happy little things. lots of native bees too.

Winter Vegetable Eating

The bok choi was simply amazing (now mostly gone to seed) and some fantastic chinese broccoli. Again that has gone to seed. been managing some celery which is amazing seeing as i use so much of it.

Its so nice to grab these extras from the garden and eat dinner. I try and use a bowl full of "stuff" from the garden every day. We eat a lot of chili and having the chili plants are amazing. the did not die over our very mild winter.

Garden Snake Invasion Imminent

This sounds AMAZING, however when you have a mild winter in this neck of the woods it means DEADLY BROWN SNAKES are going to be out in epic numbers. so i am quite worried about this this year. We didn't have the coldest winter last year and there were a few, so now with two very mild winters, the council ripping down their habitat in the bushland next to our house, im worried. yikes.

We have seen a few on the road and next door had some and a RED BELLIED BLACK (again lets not get bitten by one of them either)

While the red bellies are less aggressive, the little brown ones ARE.

Spring Planting

Cucumber Cherry tomatoes "red fig" and "beams yellow pear" and little cherry yellow. More eggplant varieties more cucumber some summer onion and lots of herbs The regular chili, curry leaf trees more citrus fruit.

Obviously we have many more things in here, this is just what i have planted.

preparing for critter invasion

Last year we lost almost all of our cucumbers and tomatos to catepillars. so we will see how we go. I need to order some "good bugs' for the garden this year. We have a big ecosystem, but sometimes nature needs a hand and i will order in lacewings and more ladybugs to help deal with hotspot pests. i don't like using chemicals if i can avoid it....
