Was ist der Big Mac Index? Der Big-Mac-Index ist ein Indikator, der die Kaufkraft verschiedener Währungen anhand der Preise für einen Big Mac in verschiedenen Ländern vergleicht. Er wurde 1986 von der britischen Wochenzeitung The Economist erfunden, um einen leicht verständlichen Vergleich auf Basis von Kaufkraftparitäten zu ermöglichen und Über- und Unterbewertungen einzelner Währungen zu zeigen. Seitdem wird er regelmäßig erhoben und auch in wissenschaftlichen Studien und Lehrbüchern zitiert. 2025 ergänzte The Economist das Konzept um den McWages-Index, der die lokale Erschwinglichkeit von Big Macs pro Lohn und pro Arbeitsstunde ausweist.
2025 hat der Dollar etwas an Wert verloren. In der Schweiz, Europa (Euro) und in Großbritannien ist der Burger im Vergleich teurer als in den USA. In allen anderen Länder ist er billiger. Am unteren Ende rangieren Vietnam und Taiwan, wo es den Burger mehr als 50% billiger gibt als in den USA.
So ein Burger ist ja nicht unbedingt die ausgewogenste Ernährung, aber wenn man nicht zu viele davon verzehrt dann liefert er doch einen Anhaltspunkt, was man sich in den unterschiedlichen Ländern so leisten kann.

What is the Big Mac Index?
The Big Mac Index is an indicator that compares the purchasing power of different currencies based on the price of a Big Mac in various countries.
